Spring Has Sprung

Field has a busy Spring. We have end of the year 5th Grade Fun Day(see below,) Spring Fling, and Field Landscape Clean-up day.  Add in concerts, end of year grades and yearbooks, and we have a wild 6 weeks until we say good by.

Please check out the Spring Fling on- line auction for exciting things you cannot live without (maybe you could live without them, but you know you really want them!)  The money raised during this event goes directly to your child's classroom.  Everybody wins at the Spring Fling!

Tomorrow is the Landscape Cleanup day at Field.  Join the Landscape Committee as they Spring Clean the Field Campus.

It was great to see the Fourth graders on Thursday.  We saw lots of happy, excited faces as they toured our building.

Fifth grade 101:

Now that you guys are experts at fifth graders, your tutoring has come to an end.  You all get an A!

  Have a great weekend!

Smarter than a 5th Grader?

You will be by June!

 The Fifth Grade Team

This week students spent three days researching topics on the ChromeBooks, and the old fashioned way, with library books! Students are to have between 10-18 source cards from 3 online sources and 1 text source. That is due next Wednesday.

We also have been eagerly waiting to see what happens in Number the Stars since our small hiatus from the book. We read two chapters this week and discovered that the Johansens are helping the Rosens escape the Nazis. During these readings we spend a lot of time discussing characterization, and how developing relationships affects us in our own lives. I also incorporate tolerance and anti-bullying lessons into this unit. Ask you child what they do to support others who may be experiencing bullying. Also, how do they stand up to a friend if they know their friend is doing or saying something hurtful? These are great discussion topics for middle schoolers!

Upcoming due dates:
4/28: ch. 4-6 quiz
4/29: all research due, brainstorm due, plot diagram due
5/1: dem ROTW due

Want homework reminders? Follow me on twitter @mrskolbinger for reminders, and other ELA related articles, jokes, etc.

Please be sure to check out the website for updated information, scheduling, assignments, and grades. Also view the website for more information about standards based grading.

 Cheers! Mrs. Kolbinger

Science promotes academic excellence!

We are up to our ears in simple machines!  We built them, read about them, wrote about them and watched a video about these wonderful mechanical items.  What would we do without simple machines?

As you go about your weekend, take a moment to recognize all of the simple machines you use everyday.

Next week- Rube Goldberg

No homework this week!

This week we took the math MCA's. Students did a fantastic job at taking their time, double checking their work, and overall practicing good test taking strategies all week long!

Preliminary MCA scores will go out to students on Monday. I will have mini conferences with each student to share with them their results and set academic goals for the summer/ next year.

On Monday, students will need their Bits and Pieces III book and we will jump  back into that for the next couple of weeks.

Again, the POW is more 5th grade appropriate so students shouldn't need too much guidance.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I am happy to say this group of students will be working out of a text book from Harcourt Brace.  They can handle the reading and the rich vocabulary.  Have a talk about the revolution over the weekend.

I am grading notebooks for chapters 10.

Onward to the Revolution! (Ours from 1775 to 1783)

Students need pencils, and many need a new notebook.

Spelling TEST next Thursday, April 30.  The words are: crumb, cemetery, revolution, patriots, independence.

Has your child completed the AVID form?  This is a program that is especially important for students that need extra help as they have tutorials each week.  AVID is a great way to get your child organized and working toward being successful all the way through college!

AVID brochures are in the office and on the bulletin board by the AVID room.

Ms Hill's BEST classes are logical thinkers!

Ms. Doyle's BEST is reading historical fiction.  For Black BEST we are reading Fever 1793 and for Teal BEST we are reading Birchbark House.  Both have sequels which will make for great summer reading.

Mrs. Kolbinger's BEST are doing literature circles. Ask your child about what book their group is reading.

A big round of applause for the families that brought in wipes and tissues.
