Fifth Grade 101:

Are your closets empty?

We have about 15 sweaters that will move to lost and found over the holiday.  Have your child claim clothing at the first floor lost and found.

Another reminder, growing bodies need rest.

Have a great weekend.

Smarter than a 5th Grader?

You will be by June!

 The Fifth Grade Team

Hello families! This was my first week back from maternity leave, and I will tell you it's been quite an adjustment for all of us. I am happy to say Gianna (Gia as we call her) Rae is a happy and healthy 14 lb. baby, and we couldn't be more in love with her!

Students have been working on their poetry books, which were due today. This will be the last assignment for the poetry unit. There are 40 points possible. I am hoping to get most poetry books graded over the winter break. Please check the portal for an updated grade once the new year starts.

On Thursday students were given MAP scores from the fall. Talk to your child about their reading goals for winter break.

After winter break we will be starting our third unit- Tuck Everlasting. I encourage you to get your child their own copy of the book for annotation purposes. If they will be using a school book, they will need post-it flags for annotations. Need a stocking stuffer idea? Give
Tuck Everlasting as a gift:)

I am also planning on getting kids into the habit of logging minutes weekly after break, along with weekly grammar homework. We will also be working on root/prefix/suffix homework come third quarter.

While I was out, several of my supplies were used generously. If you're able, our classroom would appreciate any of the following donations: post-it notes, markers, colored pencils. Thanks!

Don't forgot to use the website in order to keep up on assignments, due dates, standards based grading info., and other ELA related activities.

Happy Holidays!

We had a spelling test today.

After break we look at who colonized and why.

Thank you for the pencils.  They are much appreciated.
Thank you for signing the planner.
Have a great vacation.

Ms. Doyle

This week we concluded the Algebra unit so students can leave their Algebra books at home from now on. Students took their final Algebra test on Friday and will get them back after break. Results will be posted over break so feel free to check them out on the student/parent portals. Students will get their tests back after break on Monday.

After break we will start our last fifth grade unit on Data. After this unit it will be 6th grade math until the end of the year!

Please continue using my website to find daily homework assignments and math websites to practice at home.

Thanks for all your support and have a wonderful break with your families!

Reading B.E.S.T.   books-apple-icon2.jpg
Dec. 18, 2015

This week students finished unit 3 in Words Their Way (WTW). They took a spelling test on Thursday or Friday. WTW is a developmentally driven instructional approach that provides an integrated way to teach phonics, vocabulary, and spelling to improve literacy skills.

Fifth grade B.E.S.T. students have been reading lots of fiction and nonfiction stories at their Lexile level on myON Reading. What is myON Reading? It is a personalized literacy program that provides access to over 5,000 digital books with reading supports (such as recorded audio) that are customized to a student's reading interests and reading levels. Students can log into myON Reading anywhere they have access to a computer or iPad.

Please ask your child to log into myON over the winter break and read, read, read!

AVID This Week

We are working on marking text for deeper learning.  We have begun numbering paragraphs and finding key words.

Our students are learning to use two-column and 3-column notes in several classes.  This is the first step to working toward Cornell Notes.  Ask your child if they understand these strategies.  We will be supporting students until they reach mastery.
