5th Grade Rocks
December 23, 2011
Have a safe and restful break.  We look forward to seeing you in 2012!

Language Arts
(12/23)  Have a splendid holiday!  We celebrated with Candy Poems yesterday and Danish Hearts today.  It was fun to have some special activities to end 2011.

Students should continue to add to their reading log during vacation.  Remember, completing a book is worth 25 points.  How about a little quiet time at home!

In the new year, we will welcome student teacher, Mr. Schubert, from Augsburg College.  He will be here until Spring Break.

Science Promotes Academic Mastery! (Also known as SPAM!)

Welcome to the world of Science!  We are Microscopehaving a great year!

We are all ready for a rest- and just in time comes winter break!

Watch the skies, listen to the weather reports, and see how well you can predict the weather.

Unit 4 What's That Portion?

Dec 23

There is no assigned homework over break.  Students can improve their skills and grade by spending time at Khan Academy.  To login at the academy:

-        Enter your Minneapolis Username (looks like rfeu1901) plus @mpsedu.org.

-        Do not enter any passwords.  You will then be directed to the School Google apps site.

-        Log in here like at school.

-        Start with the easier lessons.

Parents if you have a Google Email address, your child can sign you up as a coach and you can track their progress.

Let me know how this works for you.  It is very much a work in progress.

Have a nice Holiday.

Social Studies News...

This week we have studied

Early English Settlements and took chapter 6 test on it.  As you know the Parent portal is more accurate then the mid-quarter report.  After break you will find grades for the test and chapter 6 notes.

Remember "Dazzling December" is due January 10.

Have students bring pencils for the new year.

Hello Parents and Guardians,

From childhood to adulthood, the middle years "the teen years" can be a time of lots of questions as well as challenges.   Don't worry!  All these "bumps" help your teen become well adjusted adults.  To assist with some of these "bumps" we will be adding a section to the weekly newsletter called "Family Focus" that will have monthly tips for raising healthy teens.

FAMILY FOCUS

Did you know that having an "attitude of gratitude" has been linked to better health, sounder sleep, less anxiety and depression, higher long-term satisfaction with life and kinder behavior toward others?   Try it with your family!  Do one small thoughtful or generous thing for each member of your family daily;  express your appreciation for someone's skills or talents.

Field PTA is collecting box tops to raise money for our school! Their goal is to raise $2000 this year to help students and teachers here at Field school.  It's easy and no selling involved! Each box top collected  is worth 10 cents which adds up quickly. Winter break is a great time to have students collect as many box tops as they can! When they come back from break, they can just drop them in the box in the lunchroom labeled "BOX TOPS FOR  FIELD!"  Look for the box top label in your very own kitchen on your cereal boxes, frozen food, snacks or check www.btfe.com/products for a complete list of participating box tops products. We will announce how much money we have raised at the Field School roller skating party in January! Thanks for your help!
