5th Grade Rocks
December 9, 2011
We are still in school!  Some of our students feel that winter break has begun.  Believe it or not, we still have two weeks of exciting curriculum to cover before we can let your children rest their brains!

We are so proud of our students that participated at both the book fair and the school concerts.

Fifth grade 101:
It is important for students to be on time for 1st hour.  Teaching begins when the bell rings, and if you miss the first minutes of class, you miss a lot of information.  Encourage your children to go to bed on time and arrive at school with enough time to go to their lockers and be in their seats by the time the second bell rings.

Students need to have shoes to wear when they get to school.  Boots will be necessary for the rest of the winter. Please make sure that your child brings shoes to change into at school.  Boots track sand and water into the classroom, are uncomfortable to wear all day, and smell bad by 6th hour!

Stay warm and enjoy the sunshine!

 Fifth grade is a Journey:

What path will you choose?

Language Arts
(12/9)  We just have the Afterward to finish in Number The Stars.  We will review our study guides on December 14 and take the test on December 15.  Students will need to place at least 7 events from the novel on a plot diagram to earn a C.  In addition, to earn an A or B, students will answer 2 essay questions.  All study guides (blue) are due on December 15 and will not be accepted after then.  It is a good idea to read over each study guide before the test.

We worked on organizing expository essays in class today.  There will be some time during class and all of class on Friday to write the first draft.  Please see the gray assignment page for due dates.  Students who did not complete the homework (K-W-L chart) and bring it to class had to do it in class and will not receive full credit.

Our next unit will be about poetry.

Science Promotes Academic Mastery! (Also known as SPAM!)

Welcome to the world of Science!  We are Microscopehaving a great year!

Our radio station is up and running.  We made our first contact on Wednesday, December 7 during 2nd hour and were rewarded with CSO cards in the mailbox by Thursday!  It is exciting to get mail and to know our signals are being heard!

Fifth period had the honor of setting off our first weather ballon on Friday, December 9th.  We tethered the ballon with a special kind of kite string and let the balloon climb up to about 100 feet.  Next week other classes will attempt to send up balloons with weather equipment.

No homework this week.

Unit 4 What's That Portion?

December 9, 2011

We have spent the past week assessing Unit 3 and being introduced to rational numbers, (fractions and decimals).  We will continue to work on computational skills for homework.

A new buzz phrase in education is "Learning Targets".  Hopefully the students can express the Learning  Target they are working on.  We have been working on expressing what we are trying to learn since the beginning of the year.  Some of the students are getting very good at this skill.

Some of the Learning Targets for our new Unit are:

●       I can compare and order fractions.

●       I can locate fractions on a number line.

●       I can model addition and subtraction of fractions (including mixed numbers) using different representations.

●       I can estimate sums and differences of  fractions to see if my answer makes sense.

●       I can solve real-world problems that require addition and subtraction of  fractions, and mixed numbers.

●       I can solve real-world problems with fractions, and mixed numbers involving measurement, geometry, and data.

Grades- As you view your child's grades, it would be wise to use the 2nd quarter filter.  It should be near the top.  I am not sure what the parent view looks like exactly.  Right now the default is to show the entire first semester grades and assignments.  We have a few students who have not turned in assignments in the second quarter and are failing .  When you look at the overall grade, it may not be apparent how they are currently doing because the grade is being averaged with first quarter.

Look for another puzzle this week.
