We are all sniffling and sneezing.  Will the cold season ever end?

 Sneeze in your sleeve

Also, we have lots of flu and sniffles going around. Please talk with your 5th-grader about good hand-washing practice, and good coughing and sneezingHand Wash sign

techniques... the new info from  the health authorities about coughing and sneezing  is now to "Do it in your sleeve!"

WINTER CONFERENCES:  Winter conferences are held by invitation or parent request on February 28 and March 1.  Contact your child's first hour teacher if you would like to schedule a conference.  If you have already made a request, we will be in touch with you early in the week.

p.s.:  We still need more tissues... please send a couple of boxes to your child's first hour teacher. THANKS!

We are rolling along in Bud, Not Buddy.
We like the character, have found some humor and have noticed details about the setting.

We will be looking for Bud's success as he decides what to do next.  Students got the chance to write about their own successes this week.  The Narrative Paragraph that was assigned on Tuesday is due Tuesday, February 5.  Your child has a purple assignment sheet that lays out every step of the assignment.  Work can be handwritten or typed by the student.  Please help your child revise and edit though.  My goal is to have all paragraphs in on time.  We have had planning, writing and revising time in class - the rest is up to our young writers.

Students are excited about Word of the Day 100.  Any guesses?

Science Promotes Academic Mastery! (Also known as SPAM!)

The Rube Goldberg machines are wonderful!  Students really worked hard to make their machines fun and exciting.  We had a great time sharing everybody's crazy concoctions!

We are into our Levers and Pulleys unit.  We have worked with Class 1 levers with fixed loads.  We will finish up with Class 1 levers next week, and then move on to Class 2 and 3 levers.

We use levers all day long. Can you help your child identify the levers that are part of their day?

What a crazy mixed-up week we had this week in math class!

I was gone on Monday. When I returned on Tuesday and Wednesday, ALL 5th GRADE students took the "winter" MAP math test, to help us track their progress since fall. Thursday and Friday our classes were somewhat interrupted or shortened due to the prep and presentation of the choir & guitar concerts.

We have now finished-up Unit #4, and will be doing a review session on Monday with the TEST on Unit #4 Tuesday (Feb 12). Students should be practicing adding, subtracting, and converting both fractions and percents. Over this weekend, students should review and look over all the material they have for Unit #4, and actually write down notes and questions that they may have that they can then bring to class to ask on Monday. Contrary to our earlier tests, for Unit #4 students will NOT be allowed to use their math binders for reference during the test, so should study both fraction and percent equivalents. Students should also know how to convert fractions using common denominators, and be able to order fractions and percents when comparing them to each other (such as putting them all in order from least to greatest). Students should know the meaning of the symbols "=" (equals), "<" (less than), and ">" (greater than).

Our next unit will be Unit #6 (I know it's out of numerical order) where we'll add "decimals" into our math repertoire.
