5th Grade Rocks
January 13, 2012
Happy New Year!
The fifth grade is back to paying attention and academics.  It seems that most of our students have made the transition from break to classtime.

Please remind your children to dress for the weather.  Every child gets a 20 minute recess time unless the temperature is below zero.

Fifth grade 101:
Next Friday is the end of the first semester.  Can  you believe that our students are half-way to being sixth graders?   This is a good time to check the parent portal to see if all assignments are recorded.  Some students will change specialist classes or may move core classes to better fit their needs.  Most students will not have to learn a new schedule.

Language Arts
(1/13)  Hello!  This is Mr. Schubert, your student teacher in Ms. McNaughton's Language Arts room.  I've had a wonderful first week at Field School helping the fifth graders learn about different types of poetry.  Next week, we will look at some of the creative ways we use language in poems.

As a reminder, readings logs will be due next Friday and that will be the last Friday of the quarter.  This will be last opportunity to earn points on the reading log for the second quarter.

I am excited about my time here at Field School.  If you would like to know more about me or would like to contact me to discuss Language Arts, please feel free to email me at schuber2@augsburg.edu.

Please note: Expository Essays were collected today, January 13.

Science Promotes Academic Mastery! (Also known as SPAM!)

Welcome to the world of Science!  We are Microscopehaving a great year!

A new year and a new unit.  We began levers and pulleys this week.  The homework is due on Tuesday, January 17.

Watch the skies, listen to the weather reports, and see how well you can predict the weather.

Jan 13

I am serving jury duty for a couple of weeks.  Mr. Fox is filling in for me while am gone.  He is working a short unit on Geometry.

Mr. Feuling

Hello! Welcome to Fifth Grade Math. This week and next week (1/9 to 1/20) Mr. Feuling is out on jury duty. I, Mr. Fox, am standing in his role. I am the same Mr. Fox that student taught for Ms. Hill's science class earlier in the year. I am glad to be here.

In the two weeks Mr. Feuling is on jury duty, students are expected to accomplish the two things laid out in a 2-page packet students received on Monday (1/9). Foremost, they are expected to complete pages 1 to 38 in the Unit 5 packet; pages 1/2 and 5/6 can only be done in-class. Unit 5 is about geometry. The Unit 4 packet is on hold until Mr. Feuling gets back.

The other item on students' math-to-do list is a Mini Poster. We have reviewed the directions for the poster four or more days this week. They have a handout. Basically, students are making a colorful, neat poster on plain computer paper. Their name goes on the back. It needs a vocabulary word and an illustration of that vocabulary word. The idea and words should be clear from 12 feet. (Lowercase letters should be at least 1-inch tall.)

Students should be done through page 21 when they return to school on Tuesday. This week (1/9 to 1/13), students have averaged over 20 minutes of in-class work time per day this week. Next week (1/17 to 1/20), I expect students to have about the same amount of in-class work time. The Unit 5 Packet through page 38 will be checked and graded (and possibly collected?) on the 20th.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns you may contact me at michaelalexanderfox@gmail.com . Mr. Feuling is not obligated to check his email (I don't even know if he can check it while on jury duty), but his email address is richard.feuling@mpls.k12.mn.us . I do not have access to grades or the gradebook.

I'm looking forward to another terrific week at Field!

-Michael Fox

Hello Parents and Guardians,

From childhood to adulthood, the middle years "the teen years" can be a time of lots of questions as well as challenges.   Don't worry!  All these "bumps" help your teen become well adjusted adults.  To assist with some of these "bumps" we will be adding a section to the weekly newsletter called "Family Focus" that will have monthly tips for raising healthy teens.

FAMILY FOCUS

Did you know that having an "attitude of gratitude" has been linked to better health, sounder sleep, less anxiety and depression, higher long-term satisfaction with life and kinder behavior toward others?   Try it with your family!  Do one small thoughtful or generous thing for each member of your family daily;  express your appreciation for someone's skills or talents.

Field PTA is collecting box tops to raise money for our school! Their goal is to raise $2000 this year to help students and teachers here at Field school.  It's easy and no selling involved! Each box top collected  is worth 10 cents which adds up quickly. Winter break is a great time to have students collect as many box tops as they can! When they come back from break, they can just drop them in the box in the lunchroom labeled "BOX TOPS FOR  FIELD!"  Look for the box top label in your very own kitchen on your cereal boxes, frozen food, snacks or check www.btfe.com/products for a complete list of participating box tops products. We will announce how much money we have raised at the Field School roller skating party in January! Thanks for your help!
