 WINTER IS HERE!  Boots

The first semester is over!  Our students have journeyed half way to sixth grade!

Teachers are loading grades and making final touches to the end of the semester grades.  Our grade program is not working quite right- we are aware of the problem and the district is working to iron out the bugs.  Please look at individual grades and not the final grades until after next week.

Fifth Grade 101:  It only gets harder!

If your child is still having problems with organization or turning in work, please require them to  bring home their planners and a homework folder.  We have worked in all classes including Advisory to help keep students caught up with assignments.  We are aware not all students are not up to speed with organization.  Students that are required to show their planners to their parents do better than those that leave their planners at school.  Using the parent portal also keeps kids aware that you can see if they are on top of things.

During the month of January, Advisory students are reviewing skills from previous grades - address, phone number, telling time and cursive.

Quarter Three starts Tuesday!  The first half of the year has flown!

 Sneeze in your sleeve

Also, we have lots of flu and sniffles going around. Please talk with your 5th-grader about good hand-washing practice, and good coughing and sneezingHand Wash sign

techniques... the new info from  the health authorities about coughing and sneezing  is now to "Do it in your sleeve!"

Language Arts

(1/18)

All students should bring a new notebook (and folder if replacement is needed) for Language Arts to class on Tuesday, January 22.

Students are excited to have reached the mid-point of the school year.  We will have Word of the Day #100 soon.  It will have to be something exciting!

Science Promotes Academic Mastery! (Also known as SPAM!)

BRRRR The coldest places on Earth are at the 'Poles'  and we are learning all about these frosty places.  Students that completed The Arctic Challenge produced some of the best projects I have seen this year!  Great JOb!!!

No homework this week!

We will finish with shivering on Wednesday, January 23.  Our next unit is Levers and Pulleys.  We will start with an engineering focus and then move to simple machines.  Are you (or is a family member,) an engineer?  We could always use speakers to help students see that what they are learning is really used in the real world.  Drop me an email if you can help.

We are in need of facial tissue ( I am trying hard not to use brand names!) in the science room.  Lots of sniffling going on!

Our first quiz on fractions and percents went very well this week. This quiz was included in quarter 2 grades. Many students seem to be much more comfortable and confident in these topics than our last geometry unit!

Fraction Decimal Percent

As we begin the second semester, I am finding that many students' math binders are getting pretty worn.  This is a perfect time to get students' binders re-organized... and might even be a good time to REPLACE with a new binder if necessary. Students are very hard on these 3-ring binders as they take them to each class each day and home each night. Students with good, functional 3-ring binder binders stay more organized and don't lose papers as readily. Please help to give your student the resources he/she needs to be successful in math class. pencils This is also a good time re-stock on pencils (and erasers) for use in class.

We're continuing on in this unit, now focusing on comparing and ordering different fractions & percents. We'll quickly be moving on to adding and subtracting fractions.

 January 18

We will have a test on Chapter 8 Next Wednesday, January 23.  Students should use their Ch 8 out line to study from.  Ask them to explain the vocabulary words, explain the triangle trade
route diagram with
some of the dilemmas the West Africans faced.   This grade will be the first on 3rd quarter's marking period.

Jazzy January is due Tuesday, January 29.  Students can create one or two pages about activities they have enjoyed, either school or personal for this month.
