5th Grade Rocks
  • Dates to Remember
  • Change clocks this Sunday- Spring ahead one hour.

March 6, 2015
Are you ready for spring?  Most of us can hardly wait!

Students were shedding coats and hats at recess today!  They came back to afternoon classes with big smiles!

Please ask your child about their cache of pencils.  A record number seem to have used up or lost their packages from fall.  Please help them replenish their supplies before Monday.

We are in great need of tissues.  It seems that the cold and flu season is still happening.  The Science classroom also needs more wipes- we use a lot of them while keeping the Zoo happy.

Fifth grade 101:

Rumors:  Fifth graders are talking about other fifth graders.  Please reinforce the concept that if somebody tells you something about a third party, you are not required pass that information along.  Feelings are being hurt- and friendships are being damaged by unfounded tales.

  Have a great weekend!

Smarter than a 5th Grader?

(Science Promotes Academic Mastery)

How do you isolate a variable in an experiment?  How can you be sure you are only changing one variable in a scientific trial?

We are working on our 'fair trial' section of Motion, Force and Models unit.  We worked with pendulums this week as we looked at isolating variables.  Some of our new vocabulary includes:  fulcrum, standard and force.

 Homework this week:

Pendulum Fun!  Build a pendulum from found objects.  Your recycle bin or junk drawer is a good place to start.  It may not look like the pendulums we made in class.

Your pendulum should have:

-shaft (connects bob to fulcrum)

-loop or other way to connect to fulcrum

Use your imagination!  Have fun!  Be creative!

Periods 5 and 6- Due Monday, 3/9

Periods 1 and 2- Due Tuesday, 3/10.

Have a great weekend!

Ms Hill

Today we took a quiz on dividing fractions. Grades will be posted over the weekend and quizzes will be passed back to students on Monday.

Quiz retakes will be on Thursday during Advisory. Students must fill out an action plan and staple it to their original quiz with a parent signature to retake a quiz.

Next week we will review each investigation in Bits and Pieces II and take the final test next Friday.

Click here for the problem of the week: POW

Remember, students are encouraged to have parents/ older siblings help assist them if needed on these challenging problem. Students that turn in their answers before next Friday will receive 1 point of extra credit to their homework grade.

Thanks for all your support and have a wonderful weekend!

Ms Hill's BEST classes are now stock barons!   Stay tuned (same time, same channel,) for more information.

Ms. Doyle's BEST is colonizing.  Come in any 7th period and help play, or watch the students lead their colony to victory.  It is a fun and educational game.

Mrs. Kolbinger's BEST students should be bringing home their current MAP data and plans for reading home to be signed:)

A big round of applause for the families that brought in wipes and tissues.  We are still in need of tissues, and Ms Hill can always use wipes. Noses running everywhere!  AGHHHH!

Save your Boxtops!!

For the next month+ Advisories will be collecting Boxtops to raise money for Field Community. General Mills donates directly to schools at $.10 per Boxtop. We are hoping to collect over 50 Boxtops per student. To encourage participation, advisories will be competing in a contest to collect the most Boxtops. The advisory with the most Boxtops on February 24th will win a Pizza Party sponsored by the PTA. The top 4 individual contributors will also win a gift card to Chipotle, iTunes, or Target. Student Council will count and track Boxtop collections. Please place them in a Ziploc bag and fill out an information sheet (# of Boxtops, Name, Advisory Teacher) to place in the bag. Then give them to your advisory teachers to be tallied and totaled.
