5th Grade Rocks
May 18, 2012
It has been a great week for being outside- making it hard to stay inside!  We are still learning every day- but the heat may be slowing us down a bit!

Next Tuesday and Thursday are our final Environmental Learning Fieldtrips.  We will be looking at the Bush Lake Preserve through the eyes of a naturalist.  A great time will be had by all!  Please, regardless of weather temperatures make sure your child is wearing the proper footwear.  Flats and flip-flops have no place on this fieldtrip.  Shoes should protect the foot- without a lot of exposure that can be a scrape in the making.  Also, this is a time to leave dresses and best shorts/pants at home.  We will be out and about- and we do not want anyone upset about ruining their best clothing.

Where are the The Field Trip Slips?  Please return them on Monday, May 21st!!!  We want everyone to attend!!!!  PLEEEEESE RETURN YOUR SLIPS!!!!

If you are able to help out with this field trip, please send Mr. Feuling an email.

Are you looking at the parent/child grade portal?  Please watch for missing assignments that will bring down the overall grade in a class.  It is better to look now- and keep looking- than to find out on the last days that a whole lot of work needs to be done.

Have a great weekend!

Language Arts

I so love the historical fiction stories that I read this week.  Students got feedback by Thursday in their notebooks and on the orange Revising sheet.  They also got directions for the second draft on a green handout.  They may handwrite, type or make a picture book.  Most of the second draft work will be done as homework.  Second drafts are due on Friday, May 25.
We are moving along in The Watsons and are finding out how life is different once the family arrives in Birmingham.  Anyone who did not finish Chapter 11 in class today can do it over the weekend to be ready for class on Monday.
Students did take the spring MAP test in reading only.  I was a little off track on the dates; my apologies for not giving notice to you or the students.

I am putting a big emphasis on reading logs this quarter.  They are the biggest homework assignment I give.  Students need to read every week and have the log signed in their planners for credit.  The points accumulate during the quarter and are reported at the end.  100 points is significant and can drop a grade if under 60 points are earned.  Please look at your child's planner to see that something is recorded for every class every day and sign for the reading your child does at home.

May 18, 2012

We could use a few more adults.

If you can join us on our Field Trip May 22nd or May 24th, please send me an email. Because of the Orchestra concert on the 24th, all of the Orchestra students will be going on the 22nd. The bus should be leaving Field about 8:30 and returning about 12:00. We will eat lunch at school. You should expect two e-mails from me. The first one will acknowledge your e-mail and the second sometime on the weekend of the 19th and 20th.

Thank you to everyone that has helped makes our trips so successful.

This past week we have been playing with data. Thank you to all who balanced on one foot with their eyes closed. We have concluded that people over 50 do not balance as well as 10 year olds.

Each student is on a team. The teams are earning carnival tickets. Today we had a quiz were we calculated the mean(average), median(middle) and range(spread) of the tickets each class has earned. Quiz scores will be posted. Students that have not mastered these concepts will work on them again next week.

  AVID decades of college dreams
Avid is an elective class offered to students who would like to prepare for college.  The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills, and college/career/motivational activities. Students participate in tutorials twice a week, have guest speakers, opportunities to interact with college students, and take field trips which include colleges/universities.  Students must commit to taking notes in all of their classes.  Applications will be available immediately following the presentation.  Students who already know they want to apply for AVID, may pick up applications next
to the AVID classroom door, in the Field office, or on the Field website.  http://field.mpls.k12.mn.us/AVID2.html   Applications may be turned in to classroom teachers, the Field office, or Mrs. Walker.
Brochures about Field's AVID program are located next to the AVID classroom door, in the Field office, or on the Field website.  http://field.mpls.k12.mn.us/AVID2.html

Dear Parents/Guardians of Field Middle School Students:

The Minnesota Twins recognize that good performance in school begins with good attendance and they're excited to team up with Minnesota Middle School Association (MMSA) to create the Perfect Attendance Incentive Program.

To become eligible, students must simply have "perfect attendance" for the 2011-2012 school year during quarters 3 & 4.   The reason the Minnesota Twins and MMSA have established this program is because they recognize the importance of having students in each class every day.

What are the Twins offering? Field Middle School will select one student to attend the game against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, May 262012. The Twins will provide 4 tickets for that student and up to three parents/guardians/siblings to attend. The Twins are working to develop some great activities and incentives that will take place during the game. The selected student will represent Field Middle School on the field prior to the game.  In addition, one lucky eligible student will be selected to throw out the first pitch and students will be able to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch.  The difficult part is selecting only one student from Field Middle School!  If your student is still eligible and interested in early May, they will be asked to submit an essay for judging.

We would like to thank both the MMSA and the Twins for supporting the Attendance Incentive Program and our students.

If you have any questions regarding this incentive program, please feel free to call Mr. Norlin-Weaver at 612-668-3640 or Ms. Julie Peterson at 612-668-3655.

Attendance - Family Activity
A student may be gone up to 5 days from school for a pre-approved family activity.  To get pre-approval from school, you must do the following by completeing the Family Activity Form available at the school office.
*At least 10 days before leaving, request permission from the school for your child to be gone for a family activity.
*Before leaving get your child's homework and agree that your child will finish the homework.
*Make sure that your student will not be gone for important tests like the MCA,  NALT,  or MBST.
*Agree in writing that your child will miss no more than 5 days of school.
*Before leaving, get written approval from the principal.

Family Activities Longer than 5 Days
If your family activity will last more than 5 days, you must ask permission from the principal in writing before you leave.  If the principal gives you permission to be gone longer than 5 days, your child will be expected to turn ina school report and/or a presentation to their teacher(s).

Thank you to all students and families who donated to our Pennies for Patients fundraiser over the past few weeks. We raised a total of $529.46 and congratulations to the top 3 Advisories who turned in their coins.  Ms. Fernandez came in first place with a total of $76.18, Ms. Heck came in second place with a total of $43.96 and Ms. Mazig came in 3rd place with a total of $36.35. Great job everyone!!

  • SAVE the DATE!
All 5th grade Field students are cordially invited to the
5th grade FUN night after school
    Friday May 11, 2012 from 2:40- 4:30 p.m.
    in the Field Commons.
Student Council is planning some fun games and activities for students to celebrate a successful first year at Field! We will have snacks and drinks and prizes so we hope everyone will be able to attend!
Parents- watch for a flyer that will be coming home with your child next week!

We are already halfway through 4th quarter! Midquarter progress grades will be mailed to all students on Friday May 11, 2012.  Middle School is  the time for students to continue taking more responsibility for their grades and homework. If your child is struggling or confused about their grades or assignments, encourage them to talk with their teacher or counselor so they can get the help they need before final grades are submitted in June.

Choice sheets will be sent home with students at the end of May for you to help your child select their specialist classes for next year.  Although this is later than usual, it will allow students who are participating in musical auditions the weeks of May 14 and 21 to make appropriate class selections. We are fortunate to have such an amazing variety of choices and fabulous specialist teachers! Stay tuned for more information and feel free to call me with any questions once you have a chance to look at the specialist classes.
