5th Grade Rocks
May 25, 2012
May 25, 2012

What a week! Our Environmental field trips were great- even in the rain!  We learned about raptors- ask your child how a red tail hawk poops.  It is quite entertaining.  We studied pond water and did some bird watching.  These days were well spent. The kids have been talking about the nature center all week!

We would like to congratulate all of our Field music students.  From rocking out at Whiskey Junction to instrumental concerts here and at the high school, Field students shined!  Great Job!

Our time is short, but we are still in school.  Be ready to learn!  Be ready to explore new things!  Summer vacation will be here soon enough.

Have a great long weekend!

Language Arts

(5/25)

WATSONS BOOKS SHOULD BE RETURNED TO THE MEDIA CENTER ON WEDNESDAY. REPLACEMENT COST IS $15.  ALL OTHER MEDIA BOOKS ARE DUE AS WELL.

I will be on a great adventure this weekend reading historical fiction stories that were turned in today.  Some students struggled to create a story rather than a report, yet it appears all will be successful in the end.  Some still have a lot of work to do and will need to take advantage of the long weekend.

The directions for the second draft were clearly described.  Enthusiastic 5th graders (and even your grown-up soon-to-be 6th grader) need to be reminded to use their resources.  Sometimes an encouraging question like, "You don't have to remember everything, where are the directions written down?" might be the spark to get your child to get out her/his planner or a handout from the teacher.  As you are encouraging more independence and fewer battles, please support your child by reviewing directions for big projects, due dates, etc.

Next week we will finish The Watsons go to Birmingham - 1963.  Students will hear a bit more about that historical event on Tuesday.  The test will be on Thursday (maybe Friday).

On Friday, the last reading log will be due. If you have not been signing your child's planner regularly, please send a note listing their reading at home over the last 9 weeks.

Thanks for your support over the year.  I wish your families happy school days next year.

Science Promotes Academic Mastery! (Also known as SPAM!)

Welcome to the world of Science!  We are Microscopehaving a great year!

Watch out for flying orbs- the Yo-yo unit is here! Potential and kinetic energy is being harnessed to control the up and down motion of the yo-yo.  If we give the yoyo too much or too little energy, we lose control.  We also learned about a fly wheel and how this allows a yoyo to 'sleep.'  Today, one class learned that Mr. Johnson is a Super Yo-Yoer!

Have a great weekend!

Next week we will begin building our Carnival. Teams have been busy earning tickets in various tasks. Sometime late next week we will complete the Unit 9 assessments. Some students have already done this on the computer.

A special thanks to all the parents who have helped on our trips this year.

New Chapter this week is 19: The Civil War.  (civil war- a war between citizens in the same country).

Students are required to learn one new fact a day.  So quiz them nightly about what they have learned about the Civil War.  They may look up information that they are curious about.

HW:  Memorable May is due May 29.

Students will need a 3-ring binder 1-2 inches thick for their all about me book.  This will be assemble June 4.

Thanks,

Ms. Fernandez

  AVID decades of college dreams
Avid is an elective class offered to students who would like to prepare for college.  The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills, and college/career/motivational activities. Students participate in tutorials twice a week, have guest speakers, opportunities to interact with college students, and take field trips which include colleges/universities.  Students must commit to taking notes in all of their classes.  Applications will be available immediately following the presentation.  Students who already know they want to apply for AVID, may pick up applications next
to the AVID classroom door, in the Field office, or on the Field website.  http://field.mpls.k12.mn.us/AVID2.html   Applications may be turned in to classroom teachers, the Field office, or Mrs. Walker.

Brochures about Field's AVID program are located next to the AVID classroom door, in the Field office, or on the Field website.  http://field.mpls.k12.mn.us/AVID2.html

Dear Parents/Guardians of Field Middle School Students:

The Minnesota Twins recognize that good performance in school begins with good attendance and they're excited to team up with Minnesota Middle School Association (MMSA) to create the Perfect Attendance Incentive Program.

To become eligible, students must simply have "perfect attendance" for the 2011-2012 school year during quarters 3 & 4.   The reason the Minnesota Twins and MMSA have established this program is because they recognize the importance of having students in each class every day.

What are the Twins offering? Field Middle School will select one student to attend the game against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, May 262012. The Twins will provide 4 tickets for that student and up to three parents/guardians/siblings to attend. The Twins are working to develop some great activities and incentives that will take place during the game. The selected student will represent Field Middle School on the field prior to the game.  In addition, one lucky eligible student will be selected to throw out the first pitch and students will be able to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch.  The difficult part is selecting only one student from Field Middle School!  If your student is still eligible and interested in early May, they will be asked to submit an essay for judging.

We would like to thank both the MMSA and the Twins for supporting the Attendance Incentive Program and our students.

If you have any questions regarding this incentive program, please feel free to call Mr. Norlin-Weaver at 612-668-3640 or Ms. Julie Peterson at 612-668-3655.

Attendance - Family Activity
A student may be gone up to 5 days from school for a pre-approved family activity.  To get pre-approval from school, you must do the following by completeing the Family Activity Form available at the school office.
*At least 10 days before leaving, request permission from the school for your child to be gone for a family activity.
*Before leaving get your child's homework and agree that your child will finish the homework.
*Make sure that your student will not be gone for important tests like the MCA,  NALT,  or MBST.
*Agree in writing that your child will miss no more than 5 days of school.
*Before leaving, get written approval from the principal.

Family Activities Longer than 5 Days
If your family activity will last more than 5 days, you must ask permission from the principal in writing before you leave.  If the principal gives you permission to be gone longer than 5 days, your child will be expected to turn ina school report and/or a presentation to their teacher(s).

Thank you to all students and families who donated to our Pennies for Patients fundraiser over the past few weeks. We raised a total of $529.46 and congratulations to the top 3 Advisories who turned in their coins.  Ms. Fernandez came in first place with a total of $76.18, Ms. Heck came in second place with a total of $43.96 and Ms. Mazig came in 3rd place with a total of $36.35. Great job everyone!!

  • SAVE the DATE!
All 5th grade Field students are cordially invited to the
5th grade FUN night after school
    Friday May 11, 2012 from 2:40- 4:30 p.m.
    in the Field Commons.

Student Council is planning some fun games and activities for students to celebrate a successful first year at Field! We will have snacks and drinks and prizes so we hope everyone will be able to attend!
Parents- watch for a flyer that will be coming home with your child next week!

We are already halfway through 4th quarter! Midquarter progress grades will be mailed to all students on Friday May 11, 2012.  Middle School is  the time for students to continue taking more responsibility for their grades and homework. If your child is struggling or confused about their grades or assignments, encourage them to talk with their teacher or counselor so they can get the help they need before final grades are submitted in June.

Choice sheets will be sent home with students at the end of May for you to help your child select their specialist classes for next year.  Although this is later than usual, it will allow students who are participating in musical auditions the weeks of May 14 and 21 to make appropriate class selections. We are fortunate to have such an amazing variety of choices and fabulous specialist teachers! Stay tuned for more information and feel free to call me with any questions once you have a chance to look at the specialist classes.
