No More MCAs!

Our students have taken standardized tests in English/Language Arts, Math, and Science.  Except for a few students, we are finished!

This week is the middle of the fourth quarter.  Can you believe how far our fifth graders have come?  Midquarter grades should be available soon.

We are experiencing another round of dripping noses and loud sneezes.  We are in GREAT need of some boxes of tissues. We are still going through boxes at an alarming rate.  We are happy that the fifth graders are using the tissues instead of their hands!

Fifth grade 101:

Now that you guys are experts at fifth graders, your tutoring has come to an end.  You all get an A!

  Have a great weekend!

Smarter than a 5th Grader?

You will be by June!

 The Fifth Grade Team

Students continue working on their historical fiction papers two days a week, and read Number the Stars three days a week. This week the brainstorming paper was due for credit. Some students still have not turned in source cards yet; please encourage your child to do so if they're missing!

In Number the Stars we are now at Uncle Henrik's house where he is helping keep Jews safe. We still don't know what is going to happen with Ellen and her parents. We have read through Chapter Nine.

Mid-quarter grades will go out Friday. Many students are missing homework assignments. Again, check the portal to see how your child is doing

There has been exciting new in the Kolbinger household this week: we are expecting a little girl end of September!

Upcoming due dates:
Please check the classroom calendar on the website, as we have MANY due dates coming up as we wrap up the quarter! We updated our planners today, so your child should have important dates already noted.

Want homework reminders? Follow me on twitter @mrskolbinger for reminders, and other ELA related articles, jokes, etc.

Please be sure to check out the website for updated information, scheduling, assignments, and grades. Also view the website for more information about standards based grading.

 Cheers! Mrs. Kolbinger

Science promotes academic excellence!

We have finished with our MCA testing.  What a relief!

Most students reported that the science MCAs were very different than the other tests.  This is their 'benchmark' year, and they will not have another MCA science test until 8th grade.

Homework:  Rube Goldberg!

Students were given a double-sided instruction sheet on Thursday.  The sheet includes the four State Science Standards that are being assessed with this project.  A 2.5 is at grade level for these particular standards- these do not line up well with A-F grading.  Students will receive both a rubric numerical grade and a letter grade for the project.

Due Date:  May 14, 2015.

Ms Hill

p.s.- Do you have a 'Mouse Trap' game sitting around that you no longer use?  Or one that is missing pieces?  Have I got a deal for you!  We this game with the simple machines unit every year!  I will take these games off of your hands at no charge!  Can you believe this deal?

This week we finished Investigation 4 in Bits and Pieces III. Students discovered how to calculate the tip, tax, and discounts on a variety of prices.

Students took a quiz today and will get them back on Monday. Quiz retakes will be on Thursday during Advisory for students that complete an action plan.

Since students know have an understanding on how tip and tax works it could be fun to let them practice next time you're out for dinner or get a receipt that has tax or discounts on it.

Again, the POW is more 5th/6th grade appropriate so students shouldn't need too much guidance.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Harcourt Brace, chapter 8: The American Revolution. TEST next Monday. Study vocabulary  & dates. The test will cover chapter 8, the war for independence.

Students need pencils, and many need a new notebook.

Has your child completed the AVID form?  This is a program that is especially important for students that need extra help as they have tutorials each week.  AVID is a great way to get your child organized and working toward being successful all the way through college!

AVID brochures are in the office and on the bulletin board by the AVID room.

Ms Hill's BEST classes are logical thinkers!

Ms. Doyle's BEST is reading historical fiction.  For Black BEST we are reading Fever 1793 and for Teal BEST we are reading Birchbark House.  Both have sequels which will make for great summer reading.

Mrs. Kolbinger's BEST are doing literature circles. Ask your child about what book their group is reading.

A big round of applause for the families that brought in wipes and tissues.
