5th Grade Rocks
November 18, 2011
Short week next week- school on Monday and Tuesday.  Yes, we will be doing school work!  Vacation doesn't til Wednesday and runs through Friday.  We return to school on Monday, November 28.

Enjoy your weekend- and let the snow begin!!!
5Th Grade is a journey-which road will you choose?

Language Arts
(11/18)  There were some big lies that were told in Chapter 5 of Number the Stars.  Your children might come home telling you it is okay to lie depending on the circumstances.  What a great dinner conversation you can have!

Other tidbits for dinner conversation are some great Words of the Day.  We have hit number 55.  I hope you have seen your student studying them.  One 5th grader earned a green ticket today for using Word of the Day #52 in her work.  Today we talked about conflict and the basic types of conflict in novels.

Help your child with the weekly reading log.  To clarify confusion, students may either earn 10 points a week or 25 points per book.  There is no mixing or adding points (for example, 16 pages does not equal 16 points).

On November 21 and 22 we hope to read Chapters 7 and 8.   We will continue with the novel and start an expository essay after the holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

No homework this weekend EXCEPT for the weather reports.

Next Tuesday (Nov. 22) is Mr. Fox's last day.  We will be having a glutton free send off. Potato chips, Tostedos all corn chips (natcho cheese flavor, salsa, and Non caffeinated soda are all OK to bring.  Thank You cards are a plus- he has worked very hard and has done a great job!

Unit 3 Thousands of Miles,

Thousands of Seats

November 18th

1) Students will extend their knowledge of the number system to 100,000 and beyond.

2) Students will learn that they can generalize the addition and subtraction strategies they already know to solve problems with larger numbers.

3) Students will apply their understanding of the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to solve problems.

Homework this week will be to write a short report about some place in Minnesota that has thousands of seats.  Directions will be given out in class on Monday.

Ask your child about the puzzle of the week.  We have had a puzzle each week this quarter.

Social Studies News...

This week we have studied Exploration.  New vocabulary words are:  New World, Age of Exploration, Explorers, Archeologist, Sonar, Technology, Ore, Cash crop, Astrolabe, and Compass.  I have asked the students to explain the difference between an astrolabe and a compass.  They should be able to discuss these words and the effect they had on exploration in the 15 & 16 centuries.  Next week (before Thanksgiving) we will wrap up chapter 4.
