September 11, 2015

Thank you to everyone for supporting us and seeing you at Curriculum Open House. We enjoyed meeting you.

Fifth grade 101: A great way to keep track of how your child is doing is to check the Parent/student Portals. Make sure your student knows how to get on the portal. You can look at grades for all classes.

  Have a great weekend!

Smarter than a 5th Grader?

You will be by June!

 The Fifth Grade Team

This week we wrapped up John Henry. We read the tall tale along with a folk song by Charlie Parr, and compared and contrasted the two versions of the tale. We also discussed the American Ideals that were important to people when these tales were written, and show up in the main tall tale characters. Students created one-pagers, an AVID teaching strategy, on one of the ideals.

I have graded the first grammar assignment. Please check the portal to see if your child turned in the work, and if so, what their score was. If a student scored below a 3 they will be required to redo the work through a Student Retake Action Plan. I will go over this with students on Monday. If they did not turn in the assignment, please have them do so by Monday. It is expected that students are turning in homework every Friday.

Upcoming Due Dates:
9/18- punctuating sentences grammar due
9/25- quotation marks grammar due

Want homework reminders? Follow me on twitter @mrskolbinger for reminders, and other ELA related articles, jokes, etc.

Please be sure to check out the website for updated information, scheduling, assignments, and grades. Also view the website for more information about standards based grading.

 Cheers! Mrs. Kolbinger

Science promotes academic excellence!

I would like to start by remembering those that perished on 9/11.

We have started our environments unit.  We are waiting on some creepy crawly friends. They should be here for Monday.

This unit includes a biome that is close to home- the temperate deciduous forest.  As we watch the seasons change, we are seeing what makes our area different than other parts of the world.

This week's homework is 'The First 8 Words'- observation, environment, living factor, non-living factor, behavior, function, factor and prefer.  Your child has received a worksheet with these words.  They may define these (using their own understanding of the meaning) in both words or pictures.  This homework is due on Monday, September 14.

Hopefully you are now able to access my webpage- it is:

maryhillscience@weebly.com.  I hope to have this attached to the Field webpage soon.

Have a wonderful fall weekend.

We had our first math quiz today. Students will get their quizzes back on Monday. If students know their username and password they can check their results online through the student portal. This can be accessed through the Field home page, under the student tab.

Students that score a 6 out of 10 or lower on their test must re take their quiz. Quiz re takes will be held Thursday the 17th during Advisory. Students must correct their wrong answers on their quiz, fill out an action plan and staple it to their quiz in order to re take their quiz. Action plans can be found in the classroom in the student center or on my website under the Assignment PDF's tab.

Next week, we will jump into unit 2 on Rational Numbers. Students will get a new math book so they can leave their orange Number Operations math book at home from now on.

Have a wonderful weekend!

This last week we took our first spelling test.  I will hand them back next week.

We continue to learn all about geography.  The students are taking notes, make sure you are reviewing them at home by reading through them.  You can make flashcards from the index cards that were part of the student supply list.  We are half way through our geography unit.
