Welcome back frigid air!

Sorry, with Saturday's forecast this title still seems appropriate!

The week has flown by!  Students are bit chatty, but we are moving forward in all classes.

Thank you for the facial tissue!  Even though the flu season is waning, the cold season marches on.  We will let you know when we need more.

Next week we will embark on our winter environmental day.  Students should have returned their permission slips.  If this is the first time you are hearing about the slip, check the bottom of your child's backpack!

Fifth Grade 101:

During the stretch between winter break and spring break, students sometimes fall back on their fifth grade skills.  Backpacks are left at school, instruments are left on the hall shelf, and pencils are noticeably  absent.  Please remind your child that they need to show you their planner, practice their music, and bring a sharpened pencil to class.  For those students that do all of these things every day, bravo!

 Sneeze in your sleeve

Also, we have lots of flu and sniffles going around. Please talk with your 5th-grader about good hand-washing practice, and good coughing and sneezingHand Wash sign
techniques... the new info from the health authorities about coughing and sneezing is now to

"Do it in your sleeve!"

Winter conferences are held by invitation or parent request on February 28 and March 1.  Contact your child's first hour teacher if you would like to schedule a conference.  If you have already made a request, we will be in touch with you early in the week.

The Fifth Grade Team

Language Arts

Students had a Field alumni as a guest teacher today.  I was out for a funeral.

We read chapters 12 - 14 this week.  Bud actually met the man he thinks is his father.  I don't think Herman E. Calloway is a very likable character. Ask your child what he/she thinks.

Next week we will read chapters 15 and 16.  On Thursday, I will assign an essay. Students will have some class time to work on the first draft.  See the assignment sheet for details. They will hand in the first draft.  The second draft and editing will be done as homework.  I will allow typed second drafts during semester 2.  Typing, of course, should be done by the student.

We will return to the discussion of belonging.  Don't forget, Bud was an orphan during the Great Depression who was looking for his father.  He was looking for a place to belong.  How many middle school children (even 5th graders or grown-ups) are looking for a place to belong?  It's  a worthwhile discussion to have at home.

Science Promotes Academic Mastery! (Also known as SPAM!)

The Rube Goldberg Machines were spectacular!  I am in the process of grading and putting the grades into the portal.

Mr. Wilson, a Pre-service teacher from Concordia college, is spending time in our class.  He is a good teacher and is well liked!

We are working with levers and pulleys.  This week we used levers to lift loads.  We also learned about the Newton scale.  Ask your child about the Newton scale, sub systems, Class 1 levers, fulcrums and lifting Ms Hill or Mr. Wilson off the ground with the greatest of ease!

No Homework this week.  Happy long weekend.

We have begun our new unit, Unit #6 (I know it's out of numerical order) where we'll add "decimals" into our math repertoire.  This week should have been review for most all students, since basic decimals are a part of the 4th-grade standards. I am finding that there are some students still having some problems with "place value", an understanding of which is vital to understanding how decimals function.  We will continue to work on place value in our effort to understand decimals fully.

The last students finished the Unit #4 test today, so students should receive their scored tests back when we return on Tuesday.

All students do have math homework over this 3-day weekend (both in my regular math class, and in my B.E.S.T. class); they should check my website to confirm what needs to be done.

We have completed Chapter 9.  Now we start Chapter 10, (1700's) Growing Tensions Between the Colonies & Britain.  Vocabulary words will be: debts, acts, taxation without representation, protest, parliament, repeal, proclamation.

It sounds like the revolution is not far behind.
