6th GRADE NEWSLETTER
Monday, Oct. 2, 2017

Greetings!

Navigating 6th grade:
Some students are surprised by the increased responsibilities they now face:
-- finding out what they missed in each class when they are absent:  from classmates first, then through the routines in each room (such as assignment walls, etc.), and making it up;
-- planning ahead so they don't have to visit their lockers between classes
-- keeping track of missing assignments or "retakes;"
-- getting to classes on time;
-- keeping their materials organized and complete;
-- monitoring their own behavior and time on task;

   . . . it can all get to be a little much.  We recognize that our students are children who are learning how to be responsible, and there are successes and stumbles on the way.  Sometimes it's hard to know when to challenge them and when to cut some slack -- each child is unique.  Within this delicate balance, we try to consistently provide a gentle nudge forward.

Conferences:  Many of you have already scheduled a conference with the 6th grade team, beginning Thurs., Oct. 12.  We have a small number of openings left during regular conference times:

Greetings:
Planners:  Parents I am having students write in their planners DAILY what the specific homework assignment is for the day. Including Fridays.
If your child does not have or remember their homework, please check the parent portal.  I will list the assignment.  If the assignment is a worksheet I will have a pdf of the worksheet attached to the title of the assignment. Click on the paperclip icon and the pdf will appear.

We are finished with the first unit.  The final assessment grades are in the portal.  Please make sure the grade matches with your child's test, not the numbers. The total is out of 40.  The final unit test is NOT a test eligible for retakes, but unit 1 (Prime Factorization, and LCM/GCF) retakes are still available.

Monday students will complete the FAST in the computer lab.  This is a new assessment for Field school.  When I find out more details about scores and meanings I will pass on that information.

On Tuesday we will start unit 2.  We will only spend about two weeks reviewing multiplication and division with fractions.  The skills were taught last year, but it's nice to review.

Monday:  FAST in computer lab
Tuesday:  Go over unit 1 final assessment results, syllabus for unit 2
Wednesday:  Mixed Numbers/Improper Fractions
Thursday: Multiplication with Fractions
Friday:  Multiplication with Fractions

Upcoming Dates:
Unit 2:  Rational Numbers final assessment Thurs. and Fri. October 12th & 13th
