Language Arts

This new year brings with it a new experience: a Spoken Word workshop with Tish Jones (truart speaks). Tish will work with us on figurative language and finding our voice, January 7-9. To prepare for our workshop we will study the language of poetry in the Reader's Handbook.

We will finish the week with a "write-like" poem in the style of "Words" by Pauli Murray. The poem is due at the end of class on Friday.

Reading Homework is for Extra Credit only this short week. Regular reading homework will resume on January 14. Students will be working on writing personal poems the week of the 7th.

Vocabulary for the notebook: connotation, denotation, hoard, spendthrift, squander, wrought.

Message from Wendy Wolff:

THANKS to Student Council members and MANY volunteers who helped with the school dance and food drive over the past couple weeks! We had over 300 students attend the dance and the food collection bin was overflowing as we packed and delivered it to Sabathani Center!

I have an exciting announcement! My family finalized the adoption of 2 children on December 20.  Following winter break I will be taking a 6 week family leave.  Mark Hogan who recently retired from Anthony Middle School will be coming in to take my place during that time. He is fabulous and will be supporting students with

CONTEST! We are starting an UPSTANDER initiative at Field to teach and empower students to take a stand against bullying behavior they witness. To kick off the initiative, we are holding a "DEFYING COMPLACENCY" video and essay contest. Students can work individually or as a group to create a video or write an essay that captures the meaning of an "UPSTANDER" in a creative way. Interested students should email Mr. VP at Michael.VanPatten@mpls.k12.mn.us for contest guidelines. For ideas students can visit www.bullybust.org (click on students). CONTEST deadline is January 18, 2013 and submissions can also  be emailed to Michael.VanPatten@mpls.k12.mn.us ]

Two essays and two videos will be selected  and winners will receive a $30 I -Tunes gift card!

FIRST SEMESTER ENDS January 17 and the new semester begins January 22, 2013.  Some changes will be made in student schedules at that time, mostly related to specialists. If you would like to request a change in your child's schedule for second semester, please complete a change request form and sign and return to Mark Hogan as soon as possible.  Copies of the form are available in the mailbox outside my office.
