Welcome back from winter break!

2015 - A New Year Begins, and so does the cold!

We hope everyone had a relaxing winter break, and were able rest and rejuvenate as they spent time with family and friends bringing in the new year! Now, we can concentrate on keeping warm! (Make sure your kids are dressed properly for the weather!)

We are back at school, and things are happening fast...
Coming up...
  • There are only 9 school days left in the 2nd Quarter... The 1st semester ends on Thursday, Jan 15. (...see "dates to remember" below)  Students should check with their teachers to make sure they are aware of any upcoming deadlines for assignments, including any "late" or "missing" work from this quarter.
  • We are going on a field trip to the Ordway Center in St. Paul on Tues, Jan 13. There is no cost for this trip, as it is being covered by a grant through the MPS district. We will be seeing Dobet Gnahore, a Grammy winning African musician, whose diverse music composition moves from ballads to upbeat African grooves.
    • Permission slips will be sent home with students on Tuesday this week, and need to be returned to Mr. Usem by Friday, Jan 9th.

Language Arts:
Greetings from Language Arts!

On January 6th the December reading logs are due. Please make sure you sign them. And as always I appreciate it when the kids total their minutes. :)

This week we will start looking at the ideas of Justice and Mercy in literature. We will start with the story, " Someone Who Saw" by David Gafaldi. Hours 1 and 4 will have books with the stories in them and hours 6 & 7 will have paper copies.

Have a GREAT week!

Social Studies

Social Studies
This week we begin a short unit on Social Reform with a focus on women's suffrage and abolitionists.  We continue our work on History Day, adding more work time each week.  The focus this week is "how to write a thesis statement".  There is also a writing homework assignment in which students will connect their topic to the theme "Leadership and Legacy", due Friday.  Instructions can be found on the warm-up worksheet.  Watch for a calendar coming home with important History Day dates.

Math

We finished up before break with Learning Target Quiz (LT 2.5) Students who were not in class on that Friday will take the quiz today.

We have ended the unit. Monday and Tuesday we will be working on reviewing the material in Unit 2, and will be taking the Benchmark Exam on this material on Wednesday-Thursday. Friday we will begin working on our new 3-D geometry unit, where we will build on our circle concepts to learn about cylinders. This will be a short unit.

Students who received 75% or below on any of the learning target quizzes will get a chance to do re-takes. Students desiring to do so need to talk to Mr. Usem to go over what they did wrong BEFORE they will be allowed to re-take any quiz. RE-TAKES need to be taken BEFORE the end of the quarter, to receive credit.

Reader's Workshop

This week in Reader's Workshop students will begin a new unit on note-taking methods. They will practice using outlining, mind mapping, and the Cornell method to organize their notes for a piece of nonfiction writing. In addition, students will write a summary of the notes in their own words.  Students will also begin a new Words Their Way spelling and word study unit this week.  Finally, students will continue to read independently in class and write in a Reader's Response Journal.
