7th GRADE NEWSLETTER
April 11, 2016
Report cards for 3rd Quarter will be mailed out on Monday, April 11.

(A reminder... in case you missed it last week) - Starting this quarter, Field will no longer be having B.E.S.T. class for 7th or 8th grade. All students need to have a "Health Class", so period 3 for 4th quarter will be Health class for all 7th-grade students. Classes have been reorganized for this, and students will be told where to report on Monday morning.

Language Arts Fun!
On Monday and Tuesday of this week the students will be practicing their Introduction speeches and getting them on note cards.

On Tuesday and Wednesday students will present their intro speeches to the class.

Friday we will watch a video to evaluate how well the speaker presents their topic.  We will also "play" an ice breaker game that gets the kids to speak on a topic and think on their feet.

The floor in my room will be replaced this summer. That is both good and bad, good I get a new floor bad I have to pack EVERYTHING in my room. If any of you have free time between now and the end of the year I could use some help getting my books and supplies packed up. I have boxes and can start any time. Just drop me an e-mail if you can help.  Thanks in advance! :)

Social Studies
Our current unit "Reconstruction and Reform", focuses on the time period from 1865-1877 when the U.S. was recovering from the Civil War.  We will be comparing events that promoted reconstruction and events that worked against it.  This week students will use primary source documents to create a scene and will then make a "Tableau", a scene where actors are "frozen" and then take turns saying their perspective.

    Math
4/11/16
This week we continue looking at concept of "slope" as the steepness of a line. This is a very important concept, as students progress, but one in which it it easy to make some mistakes. We want to be sure everyone has this down well before we go on.

On Thursday, there will be a Learning Target Quiz this week on LT # 5.4 & 5.5 (concepts of "slope" and "y-intercept", and how changes in either of them affect the graph of the line of an equation).

      - Mr. Usem
--------------------------------------------------------------
Students who received a score of 70% or below on Learning Target quizzes need to re-take them to improve their score and to receive a passing grade showing that they understand the learning target.

* In order to do a re-take, students need to KEEP their old quiz, and BRING it in, with the correct answers (with explanations) on a SEPARATE SHEET [forms are available in Mr. Usem's room or downloadable from his webpage] on the items they missed. This will qualify them "ready to re-take" the quiz. Re-takes are to be done outside of regular class time, and can be done before-school, after-school, during recess, or during B.E.S.T. class. Students should make arrangements with Mr. Usem to do the re-takes. Students will have 2 weeks from when the quizzes are handed back to complete the re-take.

- The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT#5.1/5.2 quiz is Monday, Apr 18.
- students can come and work with Mr. Usem a variety of times each day, if they need extra help. Available times are posted in the classroom, as well as on Mr. Usem's webpage.
---------------------------------------------------------------

The webpage lists what classwork we've done in class each day, references students' homework assignments, lists an availability schedule for students who need extra help, and has resources for parents & students.
