April 24, 2017
7th Grade students will be taking the MCA (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment) Standardized Test in Math this week, Monday through Thursday, during their regular math class period. Please help make sure they are able to do their best on this assessment, by ensuring they have gotten a good night's sleep each night, and have eaten a good breakfast and lunch.

There is a special Dress up day this Friday... "USA Day" ...see the note from the student council below.

It's hard to believe that it is the last week in April, where does the time go? The students have finished their Unit on Justice and Mercy. This week we will start a Public Speaking Unit. I like to do this unit toward the end of the year after we have gained some confidence in our ability to speak in front of classmates.

This week in class:
Monday: Final Essay for Justice and Mercy
Tuesday: Intro to Public Speaking Unit
Wednesday: Ice breaker, Either/Or  How to write a speech
Thursday: Ice Breaker, Speech writing
Friday: How to write note cards and practice using them

After analyzing photos by Lewis Hine of child laborers during the early 1900s, students are using this knowledge to make a creative writing project.  They could choose either to make up a story, draw a comic strip, or write a journal as one of the children.  I'm seeing some very creative writing and drawing in order to show what they know.  We will focus on the women's suffrage movement for the rest of the week.  There is a homework assignment due Friday.  Students received a separate sheet with a reading and questions to answer.

Current Unit: Human Body Systems

We will begin our final unit by focusing on acids and bases.
  • Learn about acids and bases
  • test some common household products to determine if they are acids or bases
  • learn about neutralizing acids and bases and how to measure strong versus weak acids and bases
Classwork/Homework: U6 RA1 Acids and Bases.  We will work through this packet during class time this week so there should not be any homework.

On Friday this week we will begin a new unit, exploring the "Pythagorean Theorem" in our new CMP text... "Looking for Pythagoras".

      - Mr. Usem

Any students may re-take Learning Target quizzes to try to improve their score and to receive a passing grade showing that they understand the learning target. The top grade possible on a quiz "re-take" is an 85% score (a solid "B" grade).
* In order to do a re-take, students need to KEEP their old quiz, and BRING it in, with the correct answers (with explanations) on a SEPARATE SHEET [forms are available in Mr. Usem's room or downloadable from his webpage] on the items they missed. This will qualify them "ready to re-take" the quiz. Re-takes are to be done outside of regular class time, and can be done before-school, after-school, during recess, during Advisory study-hall on Thursdays, during the "EXPLORE Math-support" class, or during another time arranged with Mr. Usem. Students should make arrangements with Mr. Usem to do the re-takes. Students will have at least 2 weeks from when the quizzes are handed back to complete the re-take.
The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT #5.4/5.5 quiz is... Monday, May 1.

- students can come and work with Mr. Usem a variety of times each day, if they need extra help. Available times are posted in the classroom, as well as on Mr. Usem's webpage.
The webpage lists what classwork we've done in class each day, references students' homework assignments, lists an availability schedule for students who need extra help, and has resources for parents & students.
