December 2, 2013
Hoping everyone had the very happiest of Turkey Days, and enjoyed a relaxing break and time with your family.

Here we go with another FULL WEEK at Field!
We now have three weeks of uninterrupted classes at Field before we embark on winter break... but it's not without lots of excitement and fun events. As we continue our studies in our classes, we also begin some of our winter sports tryouts and practices, and a host of performances by our performing arts groups.  Take a close look at our calendar below for all of the concerts and performances ...including our first Field School Dance of the year on Friday, Dec. 13.
*Remember, all tickets for the school dance (grades 6-8) need to be purchased BEFORE the day of the dance. No tickets will be be sold the day of the dance.

** No L.A. update right now... watch for new news next week!

---------------------

After the winter holiday the students and I will be reading A Christmas Carol. If you have not seen the production at the Guthrie this might be the year to do it. Another idea would be to watch one of the many versions out there. Try to stay away from the 1950's version that is the one we use in class.

Social StudiesSocial Studies

This week in U.S. Studies will be focused on the War of 1812 and the various tools of diplomacy that were used throughout the 1800s. There is homework due on Friday.  Instructions can be found on the blue warm up sheet.

We will begin our topic exploration for History Day this week.  Much of the work for this project will be done in class and with guidelines for each step of the way.  The actual presentation is not until early March 2014 but there will be several deadlines along the way that keep students on track with their progress.  The theme this year is Rights and Responsibilities.  Ask your child if they have an area that they are interested in learning more about. We will take a broad topic, like Women's Rights, and narrow it down to something specific, like getting the right to vote.  Watch for timelines and other pieces of information coming home.

READER's WORKSHOP

- Strategy Instruction

books-apple-icon2.jpg Good morning!   This week we provide direct instruction on how to use our knowledge of text genre to prepare to read various texts in core classes. We are studying these three questions: 1) What do you know about this type of writing? 2) What events or actions will happen in this type of text? 3) What types of information might you find in this text?

We have spent the last three class sessions connected to surveying Historical Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Horror, and Science Textbooks and identifying the answers to those three questions.  This week,  students will take Cornell notes as a way to connect to direct instruction on how to apply the knowledge they have gained to other text types that they use in their core classes.

Application of this knowledge in student's core classes is the main objective of all the work we do in Reader's Workshop.  This work will also prepare us to interact with many of the Common Core State Standards!

Student Council Announcement!

This year Field School will be partnering with a local service organization to help raise awareness and money for the people they serve in our community.

Student Council researched a few organizations in our neighborhood and chose to partner with Full Cycle, an agency that serves homeless youth in our community.

  • Full Cycle collects used bikes, fixes them up and sells them at their bike shop on Chicago Avenue and 35th Street.
  • Full Cycle provides homeless youth with a bike and 6 month paid internship that teaches them job skills and bike maintenance.
  • Full Cycle helps youth obtain affordable housing
  • Full cycle provides food and mentoring to help them until they are self sufficient

As we build this partnership, we will let you know how you can join us in supporting their valuable work with homeless youth! You can also check out their website for more information at: http://fullcyclebikeshop.org/

(...scroll down to search for informational video.)

If you are planning to purchase a bike in the next month or so, Full Cycle has their annual holiday sale for the entire month of December. All profits from their bike sales, are reinvested in the work they do with homeless youth.

The No Sale Fundraiser is back!

It's still going on... as the fundraiser runs from Nov 4 thru Dec 12, 2013.

This is a Hale/Field Fundraiser that helps our schools get much needed money to supplement academic and community events. The No Sale

Fundraising Committee is hoping to raise lots of money this year.

If you would like to support the fundraiser, please go to the GiveMn link http://givemn.razoo.com/ to donate.  Put Field School in the search box (upper right hand corner) and your choices will appear.

Please share the website with friends and community members as a way to support Field Community Middle School.

How often have your family or friends asked what they can do to help your school? This is an easy, tax-deductible way to help and all the money goes back to our school.
