7th GRADE NEWSLETTER
February 27, 2017

As February comes to a close, and March begins, we actually have a few complete 5-day weeks for a change... and we're looking forward a renewed focus & energy, encouraging us to make some terrific progress this month!

Mid-quarter time is coming up pretty soon, so make sure you are talking with your students about staying current and up-to-date on all assignments, tests, quizzes, and re-takes.

History Day projects are due this Tuesday, February 28th!  Students are busy typing, printing, cutting and assembling their projects.  Students will have access to the computer lab Monday and Tuesday, if needed.
"History Day" is Wednesday, March 1st.  Students will head to the media center during their class period and present their projects.  All parents are welcome to come and be a part of this event.  Also, I am in need of parent volunteers to interview students as they present their work.  This is a chance for the students to show what they know and be proud of the work they did. Even just one class period is helpful to me!  (see my email below)

 Please contact me at nicole.odermatt@mpls.k12.mn.us

The History Day theme for this year is "Taking a Stand".  Projects are due February 28th.

We're now working on our new unit on Linear relationships (Linear Algebra); we'll be using the CMP text called "Moving Straight Ahead", beginning to explore "rates of change" and how they show up variably in tables, graphs, and equations. Students are beginning to incorporate and work on 8th-grade standards.

Graph paper and colored pencils will be very helpful for students during this unit, as we will be doing a lot of graphing as we try to understand algebraic relationships through accurate graphs, and then  connecting them to tables and equations.

Many students are missing some homework assignments, so check the portal for those. Also, remind students to keep track of deadlines for LT Quiz re-takes (see below).

      - Mr. Usem

--------------------------------------------------------------
** SEE BELOW FOR A SLIGHT CHANGE IN QUIZ RE-TAKE POLICY:
Any students may re-take Learning Target quizzes to try to improve their score and to receive a passing grade showing that they understand the learning target. The top grade possible on a quiz "re-take" is an 85% score (a solid "B" grade).

* In order to do a re-take, students need to KEEP their old quiz, and BRING it in, with the correct answers (with explanations) on a SEPARATE SHEET [forms are available in Mr. Usem's room or downloadable from his webpage] on the items they missed. This will qualify them "ready to re-take" the quiz. Re-takes are to be done outside of regular class time, and can be done before-school, after-school, during recess, during Advisory study-hall on Thursdays, during the "EXPLORE Math-support" class, or during another time arranged with Mr. Usem. Students should make arrangements with Mr. Usem to do the re-takes. Students will have at least 2 weeks from when the quizzes are handed back to complete the re-take.

- The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT #4.5 quiz is... Friday, Mar 3.
- The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT #4.6/4.7 quiz is... Friday, Mar 17.

- students can come and work with Mr. Usem a variety of times each day, if they need extra help. Available times are posted in the classroom, as well as on Mr. Usem's webpage.
---------------------------------------------------------------

The webpage lists what classwork we've done in class each day, references students' homework assignments, lists an availability schedule for students who need extra help, and has resources for parents & students.
