7th Grade Newsletter

February 2, 2015
Conferences are coming up... Winter conferences are scheduled by request of either teachers or parents.

Winter conferences differ from fall conferences in in that they are not necessarily scheduled for all students. Scheduled for Thursday evening Feb 12 (3:30-7:30pm) or Friday morning Feb 13 (7:30-11:30am), conferences will be scheduled for students where teachers and/or parents feel there is a particular concern regarding their progress in school this year.
- You may receive an email or a call from someone on the 7th-grade team to schedule a conference for your child. If you do, please REPLY ASAP, so that we might best accommodate your schedule.
- If you don't receive a call, but would like to schedule a conference for your child, please contact your child's advisory teacher, indicating what times might work for you on the conference days above. We will try to accommodate your requests as much as possible.

MATH TEAM will be going to a competition this week at the U of M.
Read the article in the right column about qualifying!

Language Arts:
This week starts off with Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Miser. The kids will be looking at how the author used words to get us to feel different things about each character.
Later in the week we will have a Socratic Seminar with questions the students came up with. They did a mighty find job of crafting discussion worthy questions that require higher level thinking.

I threw my back out so I am out today, hopefully I will return tomorrow.

- Ms. Halasz

This week we will:
1) Measure the solubility of two substances
2) Find out if the total volume of two liquids is always equal to the sum of their initial volumes
3) Determine if mass is conserved when a solute dissolves in a solvent.

Homework U4 RA2: Solubility and Concentration will be given out on Monday and due back by Friday (4% bonus if its turned in by Tuesday).

Social Studies

Social Studies
During the month of February will be focused on our History Day projects.  Most weeks, we will have 2 days in the computer lab with days in between using iPads and organizing our notes.  We have a little more than 4 weeks until the big day which is Wednesday, March 4th.
Meanwhile, we continue our study of the conflict between the North and the South in the days before the Civil War.  The homework assignment this week  is to write a letter to the editor regarding the naming of our Lake Calhoun after a pro-slavery senator from South Carolina.  Students are to make arguments against it based on the historical information we have learned in class, such as the ideas of the abolitionist movement and the regional differences of North and South.  Letter should be 3 paragraphs and is due Friday.

- Mrs. Odermatt

Last week we ended our 2-D & 3-D Geometry unit on Circle and Cylinder concepts by taking the district's benchmark exam.

We are now moving back to working more with proportional relationships once again, with our new CMP text "Moving Straight Ahead." This unit explores linear relationships, and eventually will bring us toward using these skills to help us explore an understanding of linear algebra.

As we will be doing a lot of graphing during this unit, it is a good idea for all students to make sure that they have a good supply of graph paper in their folder, ready for use when they need it. (Graph paper with lightly-colored lines works best, as it is much easier for students to see their pencil lines against such a background, and therefore easier for them to visualize and grasp the concepts we'll be studying. I know it's not the cheapest thing to purchase, but is will be helpful to students throughout this unit, and, I think, well worth the investment.)
