Last week I launched a study on the topics of Mood, Tone and Point of View. We are looking at these three in relationship to both writing and film. Our primary focus was on how writers use these tools but today and into next week we will look at how film makers use them to get audiences to feel or experience something.

As you may know we started looking at Greek and Latin affixes. Last week students learned 15 common Greek roots and this week we are working on 12 Latin roots. It was amazing to watch the students faces as they realized the relationships between words such as, audition, auditorium and Audiologist. Or that the character Ang from the movie Avatar was an "Air Bender" and the term "ang" in Latin means bend. So many relationships so little time!

Coming up next is a short creative writing project, and then it is on to A Christmas Carol. Never a dull moment in 7th grade...

    Math - Mr. West

Hello everybody. This week we working on finding surface area and volume of prisms and cylinders. Cylinders tend to be particularly challenging because we are also applying formulas for area and circumference which we have recently learned.

    Social Studies -- Ms. Odermatt

We will discuss the idea of Reconstruction after the Civil War. Students will begin to brainstorm what would be needed for a country that just endured 4 years of war. And how that country adjusts to the death of President Lincoln and the new leadership of Andrew Johnson. Homework is a reading with 2 questions for understanding due Friday.

    Science - Mr. Boler

A test on part 2 of Properties of Matter will given over two days next week - a lab portion that will be given on Monday February 11 and a written portion that will be given on February 12. Students were given a review guide on February 5th. The review guide lists steps for students to take to prepare for the test and has eight review questions that should be answered as completely as possible.

For labs this week students will separate solutes using chromatography paper, and measure how adding salt to ice and boiling water changes the water's melting and boiling points.
