Our annual Ski Trip to Hyland Hills Ski Area in Three River Park District is coming up soon, on Tuesday, February 7. We will leave school by 8:30, and will return by 2:35, so students can catch the buses home.  Details were sent home with all students today... look for the registration forms and release forms. This ski trip has been a great success every year... providing great fun for experienced skiers and also a great chance for students who have never skied to try doing so. Parents who are interested in chaperoning should contact Ms. Halasz for more information.

CLICK HERE for SKI TRIP FORMS for downloadable and printable PDF documents of the 3 FORMS necessary for students to attend the ski trip. LINKS to the forms can also be found in the "downloadable documents" area of Mr. Usem's webpage.

    Language Arts
Thanks Again:
We got the E-reader (tablets) out Friday and started using them. We needed to look up some vocabulary for our next chapter. Being able to assess the internet and not having to leave the room or fight to get a lap top cart was very nice. The kids loved using them, and worked quickly.

There is an app on the E-readers that allows students to check out books from Hennepin County library. I will be working to sign up all the students so this will be an option for them.

This week in class:
Monday: Finish vocabulary work and ski trip discussion
Tuesday: Start chapter 5&6 , Chart relationship between main characters
Wednesday:  Discuss Hyperbole and it's impact on writing
Thursday: Media Center and Library Card applications
Friday: No School

Thanks so much.

This week our focus will be on completing a first draft of a thesis statement.  We will continue our time researching our topics and recording sources and summaries in notebooks.  I am encouraging students to visit community libraries in order to find books on their topic.  Using a variety of sources leads to a much deeper perspective on the topic and a better developed project. First drafts of thesis statements are due this Thursday, January 26th. (All missing work is due this Thursday as it is the last day of 2nd quarter.)

If you are interested in helping in the classroom, I would love any assistance you could give.  Even just one time would be appreciated.  Students need help navigating websites,  narrowing their topics, and putting all the ideas together for their History Day projects.  Please contact me at nicole.odermatt@mpls.k12.mn.us

The History Day theme for this year is "Taking a Stand".  Projects are due February 28th.
Feel free to check out this website for information:

This week we will focus on the expansion and contraction of particles
1) Notes on expansion and contraction of particles
2) Labs: Construct and calibrate a thermometer using water and then air as the contraction/expansion fluid.

Homework - Read: Unit 3, RA4, "States of Matter" passed out on Monday due by Thursday (turn in Tuesday for a 4% bonus).

To review science content, make-up notebook entries, watch a video clip about any science topic of interest - go to the 7th grade science web page at:  http://www.bolerscience.net/

Students completed their Learning Target Quizzes on LT #4.3  & 4.4 (frequency tables, histograms, and circle graphs) last Friday.

This week we'll continue working with circles, using our knowledge of proportional reasoning, to calculate the arc-length and sector area of circles. Students will find that some of the skills we learned earlier this year about proportions, and last year about circles, are coming together in this unit. This learning target willnot be assessed until the beginning of next quarter.

      - Mr. Usem

Students who received a score of 70% or below on Learning Target quizzes need to re-take
them to improve their score and to receive a passing grade showing that they understand the learning target. To see the cut-off scores for re-taking each quiz, t
hey are listed on each specific day
on the "Classwork & Homework" LINK section of my webpage.
* In order to do a re-take, students need to KEEP their old quiz, and BRING it in, with the correct answers (with explanations) on a SEPARATE SHEET [forms are available in Mr. Usem's room or downloadable from his webpage] on the items they missed. This will qualify them "ready to re-take" the quiz. Re-takes are to be done outside of regular class time, and can be done before-school, after-school, during recess, during Advisory study-hall on Thursdays,  or during another time arranged with Mr. Usem. Students should make arrangements with Mr. Usem to do the re-takes. Students will have at least 2 weeks from when the quizzes are handed back to complete the re-take.
- The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT #4.1 & 4.2 quiz is... Thursday, Jan 26.

- students can come and work with Mr. Usem a variety of times each day, if they need extra help. Available times are posted in the classroom, as well as on Mr. Usem's webpage.

The webpage lists what classwork we've done in class each day, references students' homework assignments, lists an availability schedule for students who need extra help, and has resources for parents & students.

Community Service:
Starting now, we have a fundraiser for the homeless shelters called
"Hibernating for the Homeless"
We are selling gummy bear grams
for students to send to each other.
The cost is $1.00 per gram.
The money raised by selling the gummy bear grams will go towards buying supplies for snack packs which we will be giving to homeless shelters.

Spirit Committee:
Twin day is coming!  On Friday, February 3rd
we encourage all students to dress in pairs or in Twins sports apparel.
Anyone can dress up and appropriate clothing is expected.
We will hold a competition for students who have the most spirit.   Twins logo
During the contest we expect good sportsmanship.

As the Social Worker at Field I am always amazed by the generosity of the Field Community. I am requesting your help with a Second Semester Supply Drive. I am in need of single subject notebooks, folders, pencils, binders and pencil pouches. Please drop your donations off at the Main Office. They are greatly appreciated!
