Field School- 7th Grade Newsletter (010317)

January 3, 2017
We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful winter break.

We are excited to see everyone again and look forward to
jumping into new learning in the new year!

We have about 3 1/2 weeks left in this semester, so it would be a good idea to review your student's records with them on the Portal and encourage them to catch up on missing assignments -- it's not just a good practice for personal responsibility, but those assignments are given for particular learning reasons.
- Make sure you are taking care of any missing work/fix-up/retake opportunities as soon as possible.

This week looks to be very cold. Remember, Field students still go outside during recess, unless the weather gets to a dangerously cold level (including dangerous wind-chill). Please make sure that your student is coming to school prepared for the outside weather with a warm jacket (not just fleece wear), gloves/mittens, hat, and boots.

Happy New Year!

I need HELP! I would love to have a few volunteers come help me get the e-readers set up so we can use them. It is a multi step project but with helpers we can make short work of it. I am free Mondays or Tuesdays after school. If you are interested in helping send me an e-mail mahal001@mpls.k12.mn.us    Thanks in advance.

This week in class:
Monday: Off
Tuesday: Web Quest on Afghanistan
Wednesday: Web Quest/Discussion on information
Thursday:  Book check out/Prep work for our new book: The Breadwinner
Friday: Reading ch  1/2

Thanks so much.

Happy New Year!  We will be completing Unit 2 and preparing for the test which will be next Tuesday, January 10th.  Students will receive a study guide and will have some class time to review.  There is homework this week.  Students will complete a graphic organizer in order to understand how their topic connects to this year's theme, "Taking a Stand".  The homework is due on Monday.

The History Day theme for this year is "Taking a Stand".  We will begin brainstorming topic ideas but the bulk of the class work time will take place in January and February.  Many more details to follow!  Feel free to check out this website for information:

We'll have our next Learning Target quiz on Tuesday (Jan 4) this week on LT #4.1 & 4.2 (calculating measures of center of mean, median, mode, and range... including how changes in specific data points effect and change the differing measures of center.)

On Thursday and Friday (Jan 5-6) students will be taking the winter MAP Math Standardized Tests during their math class periods.  We will use this data to help gauge instruction, student progress, and readiness for upcoming MCA tests this spring.

- We will be doing a lot of graphing in this unit, so it would be helpful if all student have a supply of graph paper, colored pencils, and a small ruler with which to work on assignments.  You can also print off graph paper from my webpage.

      - Mr. Usem

Students who received a score of 70% or below on Learning Target quizzes need to re-take
them to improve their score and to receive a passing grade showing that they understand the learning target. To see the cut-off scores for re-taking each quiz, t
hey are listed on each specific day
on the "Classwork & Homework" LINK section of my webpage.
* In order to do a re-take, students need to KEEP their old quiz, and BRING it in, with the correct answers (with explanations) on a SEPARATE SHEET [forms are available in Mr. Usem's room or downloadable from his webpage] on the items they missed. This will qualify them "ready to re-take" the quiz. Re-takes are to be done outside of regular class time, and can be done before-school, after-school, during recess, during Advisory study-hall on Thursdays,  or during another time arranged with Mr. Usem. Students should make arrangements with Mr. Usem to do the re-takes. Students will have at least 2 weeks from when the quizzes are handed back to complete the re-take.
The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT #3.1/3.2/3.4-3.5 quizzes is... Tuesday, Jan 10.
The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT #3.3 quiz is... Wednesday, Jan 18.

- students can come and work with Mr. Usem a variety of times each day, if they need extra help. Available times are posted in the classroom, as well as on Mr. Usem's webpage.

The webpage lists what classwork we've done in class each day, references students' homework assignments, lists an availability schedule for students who need extra help, and has resources for parents & students.
