7th Grade Newsletter

March 17, 2014
March... you gotta love the month...
it's either warm with a hint of spring and a ton of mud, or it's still freezing cold, windy, & nasty!
It might be many things, but it's never boring in 7th Grade at Field School.
This week features SPIRIT WEEK at Field:
  • MONDAY:  Crazy Hat/Hair Day
  • TUESDAY: Underwater Day
  • WEDNESDAY: UP-North Day
  • THURSDAY: Rocker Day
  • FRIDAY: Pajama Day
There is also a
Field School
 ***** BL
ITE *****
Theme School Dance
[6th-8th Grade only]
on Friday, Mar 21 (6:30-8:30pm)
Dance tickets will be on sale for $5.00 during lunch each day through Thursday.
  • Note: Dance tickets need to be purchased by THURSDAY... no tickets will be sold on Friday, the day of the dance.
    • There is no financial barrier to attending the dance. If you need assistance paying for tickets, please talk to Ms Wolff.
  • We still need a few parent volunteers... if available, contact Ms. Wolff.
This week also features our Hale/Field Schools Hygiene Drive! See the note below about the drive, and BRING STUFF to lunch!

Also, remember that there are only 2 weeks left before the end of the 3rd Quarter... Check to see if you're missing any assignments from this quarter, and make an effort to get those assignments in ASAP!

Language Arts
Our week starts off with questions and a discussion on The Bishops Candlesticks. We move from there to work on your speaking and Listening learning targets. Each class will be broken into 4 groups and each group will be assigned a section of our play. They will prepare a readers theater of sorts and on Thursday and Friday before Spring Break they will preform their sections for each other. Practicing for this is quite chaotic so wish me luck. :)

Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions or concerns this year.  mahal001@mpls.k12.mn.us is the best address to use.

Happy St Patty's Day!  Mr. Boler is 7/8ths Irish.

This week we will be continuing our work with the Periodic Table of the Elements and we will also take a closer look at the compound water in a lab using electrolysis.

HOMEWORK RA11, Why Atoms Combine, will be passed out on Monday and is due by Friday (turn in by Tuesday for a 4% bonus).

Science Bowl Students - turn in ScienceSaurus to Mr. Boler or the library.

Social StudiesSocial Studies
This week in U.S. Studies we continue our unit on the Civil War.  Students examine why the battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg were turning points in the war and take a look at Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.  Students will take part in a Round Table discussion by choosing 6 historic leaders of this time and offering the perspectives of each on the involvement in this war.  There is homework due this Friday (see warmup sheet for directions).

- Mrs. Odermatt

We began working on our unit... "Moving Straight Ahead"...an introduction to linear algebra. Students have been looking at how linear functions can be understood through examination of a table, a graph, or an equation, and trying to understand the elements that each different type of representation contributes to our understanding.

This hasn't always been easy, but has yielded some very interesting discussions in class.

It is important in this unit that students keep up-to-date in all their note-taking, classwork, and homework (even if it isn't something that we are "handing in for credit"), in order to fully understand what we're discussing in class. I am deliberately having students retain some lessons/assignments in the "Classwork" section of their binders so that they have some good working examples of these concepts.

During this new unit we will be doing quite a bit of graphing. I suggest that students purchase a supply of graph-paper  (the kind that has light blue, green, or peach colored lines for the grid) for use in their assignments in class and homework. Students might also want to have a small set of colored pencils with them to help with graphing. With these tools I have seen that students will do a much better job in their graphing, will accomplish it more easily, and the graphs will not only look better, but will also be more useful as a learning tool.

Good morning!
The main focus of our work this week will be connected "I can manage my time".  The students will be working to manage their time as they complete a variety of assignments connected to writing about a set of regular length (1,500+ word) "paired texts".  One text will be about Frederick Douglass and the other text will be about The Tuskegee Airman.

We will write about the texts while responding to different difficulty levels of questions. We will then be finishing our writing with Connections we can make to the text.   This is the "L" in P.E.E.L., where the students try to generate a Link (L) that is a text to text connection they can make.

As the students complete the assignments, they will have extended opportunities to practice for the MCA III reading assessments which will start right after spring break.
Have a great week!

Twins logo

Dear Parents/Guardians of Field Middle School Students:

The Minnesota Twins recognize that good performance in school begins with good attendance and they're excited to team up with Minnesota Middle School Association (MMSA) to create the

Perfect Attendance Incentive Program

To become eligible, students must simply have "perfect attendance" for the 2013-2014 school year during quarters 3&4.   The reason the Minnesota Twins and MMSA have established this program is because they recognize the importance of having students in each class every day.

Hale read-a-thon surprise guest Twins

What are the Twins offering

Field Middle School will select one student to attend the game against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, May 17, 2014

The Twins will provide 4 tickets for that student and up to three parents/guardians/siblings to attend.

We would like to thank both the MMSA and the Twins for supporting the Attendance Incentive Program and our students.

If you have any questions regarding this incentive program,

please feel free to call Mr. Norlin-Weaver at 612-668-3640

or Ms. Julie Peterson at 612-668-3655.
