7th Grade Newsletter
2013-2014

May 19, 2014
As usual, the last few weeks are getting pretty busy.

Students are busy with spring sports, concerts, family events, and still trying to keep up on schoolwork (yup... we're still having classes!). Many are trying to also work on missing work and bringing up their grades. Help them stay on-track and organized.

Make sure students are aware of any FINAL deadlines for submitting work, especially missing work. While many students think they can submit work right up until the last day of school, this is usually not true... many teachers cut-off accepting work BEFORE the final day of school, so that they can get grading done and submit grades by the end of the school year. If your child is in this situation, make sure your student checks in with his/her teachers, to know when they can submit work and still receive credit.

It's our Spring Field trip to the
  Minnesota Zoo
THIS FRIDAY,
May 23

** We still have 35 permission slips that have not been returned. Students CANNOT go with us on the trip without a permission slip signed by parent/guardian.

PLEASE RETURN

PERMISSION SLIPS ASAP,

as we want ALL students to go on this fun and educational trip!

- Permission slips should be given to Mr. Usem.

[So that we don't confuse everyone, The Waterpark permission slips for our end-of-the-year trip will be sent home separately at a later date. For parents who would like to know the cost of the Waterpark trip so they can budget, it is $20 per student. Of course, we want ALL of our 7th-grade students to be able to join us on this trip... If this cost presents a hardship for any family, scholarships for the waterpark trip are available... contact any 7th-grade teacher, Ms. Peterson (social worker), or Ms. Wolff (counselor), if you there is such a need.  -contact info is on the right panel]

The students are starting on their final project for A Christmas Carol. They will think of a metaphorical transformation from our world and apply it to Mr. Scrooge's transformation. I will explain the project today and we will have class time Monday and Tuesday to work on it. The project is due Friday.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions or concerns this year.  mahal001@mpls.k12.mn.us is the best address to use.

We are rounding the corner on our final stretch of school days!  We will end the year with a unit on WWII.  This week lessons will focus on Hitler's rise to power and the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Students have a homework assignment to interview a parent or other adult family member about WWII.  Have a 5-10 minute conversation with your child about ANYTHING you know or have heard regarding WWII.  You must have retained something from those long-ago history classes, right?! Interview is due this Friday.  We will have one last unit test during the final week of school.

 Math

We are continuing this week to a look at our

linear equation unit, working on understanding slope, and connecting linear equations to tables, graphs, and appropriate context, before we take the benchmark exam on this unit later this week.

Many students are missing assignments, or have opportunities to re-take quizzes, and need to focus on these things this week before we get too close to the end of the quarter. Check with your student to see if this is the case for them.

READER's WORKSHOP

- Strategy Instruction

books-apple-icon2.jpg

Good Morning,
Our students have almost completely finished working on
writing their graphic novels using the Comicmaster.org website.  Most students will be taking one day to finish writing their stories, and then print their stories so they can get feedback from me.  Students will then make additions and corrections as needed.  The stories are turning out wonderfully!
Later this week we will be starting our work on standards connected to point of view as it relates to writing and reading. Some students will have opportunities to skip portions of the lessons, as they have passed parts of the lessons based on their point of view pre-test. Students will receive feedback later this week about their test results from the teacher connected to the point of view standards.

Have a great week of reading and writing!

from the Field School Counselor..

Thanks to all Field students, staff and families for your generous support of the student council local and global acts of service this month!

We collected 52 bikes that were donated to Full Cycle, a bike shop located on 34th and Chicago Avenue South that helps homeless youth by providing housing, job training and mentors. The bikes donated by our community will help sustain these programs. If you are looking to purchase a bike or need any bike repair or maintenance, consider utilizing Full Cycle.  All revenue from sales and services is reinvested in the programs they offer to homeless youth in our community.

We also raised $375 to help build a school in Guatemala.  This money will be donated to Free the Children and will help support the 57 million children who do not have access to school around the world! Congratulations to 5th graders for raising the largest portion ($186) of this money and to Lonna Wilson for winning the bike race!  Thanks to all of our racers, Taunya Kolbinger, Brian Kafura, Mark Usem, Lonna Wilson and Mr. Norlin Weaver for participating. The school spirit and enthusiasm was remarkable.
