In our last week of classes we are presenting our free choice speeches. Students spent two days in the computer lab doing research and then we put together an informative presentation. As this unit has progressed the confidence levels of the kids has risen tremendously. I have enjoyed listening and helping the kids on this speaking journey.

One last thanks to all of you for your support and understanding this year. As you know this was a very hard year for me but with everyones help we got through it. The kids worked hard and I felt they had many successes. It was a pleasure learning about your student and working with all of you. Thanks Much...

Life is good and Summer is upon us!!!

    Math - Mr. West

Any students interested in signing up for Intermediate Algebra should be sure and hand in their request form to Mr. West or Ms. Wolff by tomorrow. A copy of Ms. Wolff's earlier message follows:

Dear Parents of Field 7th Graders! Your child is coming home with a notice about next year's Math options! Please take a minute to review...and respond by next Tuesday, May 29, 2012 In response to some changes in district math sequencing, all Eighth grade students will be taking Eighth Grade Algebra during their core Math class next year. In addition to this course, we will be offering "Intermediate Algebra"(9th grade Math) during B.E.S.T. for all students who would like to begin an advanced track in Math. Students who successfully complete Intermediate Algebra, will be recommended to begin Geometry in 9th grade. Please indicate on the form sent home this weekend, or respond to this email, if your child would be interested in taking Intermediate Algebra during B.E.S.T. period. Students who choose this option would not be able to take Spanish B as it meets at the same time but could continue in beginning Spanish during their Specialist period. Accommodations will be made for AVID students so they will have access to the Intermediate Algebra course as well as their AVID course. We appreciate your time and attention to these important decisions and need a response by Tuesday May 29, 2012! Specialist choice sheets will also be coming home later next week. 7th Grade Math Response Link Wendy Wolff Field School Counselor 612.668.3654 wendy.wolff@mpls.k12.mn.us

Students can still take advantage of the opportunity to raise their grade by earning medals on Manga High through this Friday.

    Social Studies -- Ms. Odermatt

    Science - Mr. Boler

Population and Ecosystem tests have been corrected and scores entered into the portal. Of our three major tests, this one had the highest average test score. Many students have improved their focus in class and increased the amount of time spent preparing for the test. Students will receive their corrected tests on Wednesday.

On Tuesday students will spend time on the Foss web site doing exercises in genetics and natural selection. Parts of Wednesday - Friday will be spent on rocket construction and a review of the forces involved.

ROCKET LAUNCH at McRae Park will be on Monday June 4th. Half the students will be walking to the park for 3rd and 4th periods and the other half for 6th and 7th periods. In addition to blasting off their rockets, students play sports and games or just hang out. Parents are welcome to watch and help monitor students. If you are able to attend either session, please let me know at: leon.boler@mpls.k12.mn.us

    Family Focus

February Enforcing consequences can be tough - your teen needs you as a parent, not a pal! It may be hard to believe but teenagers want rules and limits set for them. Establish family rules and expectations and then set appropriate consequences for not following a rule. Teens are less likely to engage in inappropriate behavior that they have previously discussed and established clear consequences for with their parent(s). Be consistent. And most importantly, notice and acknowledge the positive.

January: The middle school years are a good time to start giving your teen more independence; It helps them establish their own place in the world. As your teen becomes more reliable and mature increase privileges and opportunities for independence. If they fall, they still have you to catch them and to guide them before they are out on their own. Remember some of life's most valuable lessons are learned through life experiences! Struggling navigating through the teen years? Two Field parents developed an app that answers alot of teens' -- and their parents'-- tough questions about things they face: relationships, mental health, substance abuse, bullying, etc. called teensphere. You can learn more about the app at teensphere.com. Check it out!

December Did you know that having an "attitude of gratitude" has been linked to better health, sounder sleep, less anxiety and depression, higher long-term satisfaction with life and kinder behavior toward others? Try it with your family! Do one small thoughtful or generous thing for each member of your family daily; express your appreciation for someone's skills or talents.
