EXPLORE CLASS CHOICES FOR 8th-GRADE (2017-18)
Students have received and completed their elective choice forms for EXPLORE classes for 8th-grade next year (2017-18) in their advisory classes. Administration did not want the forms sent home, as they were to be collected in advisory the same day they were filled out and turned in to the office.
We encourage parents to talk with your student about their choices for next year,
(additional copies of the forms are available on the Field School Website - LINKS are on the right side)
as that at this stage these forms can easily be altered or changed if students and parents find out that they want to rank their choices differently after discussing them together. Please feel free to contact your student's advisory teacher, or Ms. Martin (Assistant Principal), with any questions regarding these choices.

TRANSPORTATION/BUS FORMS for NEXT YEAR (2017-18) have been sent home last week in advisory classes. These forms were to be returned by last Friday, May 26, to confirm transportation needs for next year. (Students who are within the "walking area" for Field School might not have been given a form.) If your student's forms were not returned last week, you will be receiving another form as a 2nd-REQUEST this week.  DEADLINE on these forms is May 31. Please return for ASAP, as we have a strict deadline to get these confirmed & turned in to the district office.
- Any questions on transportation, please contact Mary Beth Good in the Field School office (email: MaryBeth.Good@mpls.k12.mn.us)

Last week we got off track and by the end of the week our schedule was so off that this week I decided to write a paragraph about what we hope to accomplish. Assigning a day to each thing does not seem to work with our speech unit. So this week we will finish writing our "Quote Speech."  After that we will create note cards and practice. Eventually students will present their speech to the class. If we finish early I will introduce our last topic which is "Pet Peeves."

Social Studies
We will have a final assessment for Unit 6 (WWI and WWII) this week.  Students will have the rest of the remaining school days to work on a group project. They will choose a topic from a list of events that happened during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.  In groups of 2 or 3, they will research the topic and then create a google.slides presentation.  No homework this week.
(Students should be mindful of any missing assignments and get them in as soon as possible.)

Current Unit: Human Body Systems

Quarter 4 test (acids, bases, and human body systems) will be given on Wednesday June 7th. A test review packet was given to students on Tuesday May 30th.

This week we will:
  • Have a guest speaker (Dr. Kocken) who will talk about common injuries and treatments of bones and muscles
  • Activity: Color-code the heart and systemic and pulmonary blood flow
  • Fill in note guide for body system defenses against pathogens
  • Go over the answers to the Test Review Guide (Thursday and Friday)

Homework: 1) Complete 70% of the Test Review Packet by Friday! 2) Review the Quizlet study set (Human Body Systems 2017) that is now available.

A great representation of the Pythagorean Theorem.
We completed on our unit exploring the Pythagorean Theorem last week. There will be a Learning Target Quiz on application of the Pythagorean Theorem on Tuesday, May 30.

Next, we'll be exploring inequalities, graphing them and seeing how solving inequalities differs from solving equations.

The grade-book portal is being continually updated to include all "late"-submitted assignments and quiz re-takes, but they may be delayed a few days from submission. (I know both parents and students would like them updated immediately, but that's not always possible, and I'm pedaling as fast as I can.) Continue to check your child's status to help insure they get all assignments in before the quarter comes to a close. Remember, quizzes account for 70% of their grade, so quiz re-takes are the best way for students to improve low grades.

      - Mr. Usem

-------------------------------------------------
** QUIZ RE-TAKE POLICY:
Any students may re-take Learning Target quizzes to try to improve their score and to receive a passing grade showing that they understand the learning target. The top grade possible on a quiz "re-take" is an 85% score (a solid "B" grade).

* In order to do a re-take, students need to KEEP their old quiz, and BRING it in, with the correct answers (with explanations) on a SEPARATE SHEET [forms are available in Mr. Usem's room or downloadable from his webpage] on the items they missed. This will qualify them "ready to re-take" the quiz. Re-takes are to be done outside of regular class time, and can be done before-school, after-school, during recess, during Advisory study-hall on Thursdays, during the "EXPLORE Math-support" class, or during another time arranged with Mr. Usem. Students should make arrangements with Mr. Usem to do the re-takes.

- The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT #7.1, 7.2, & 7.3 quiz is... Friday, June 2.
- The DEADLINE for re-takes on the LT #7.5 & 7.6 quiz is... Thursday, June 8.

- students can come and work with Mr. Usem a variety of times each day, if they need extra help. Available times are posted in the classroom, as well as on Mr. Usem's webpage.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The webpage lists what classwork we've done in class each day, references students' homework assignments, lists an availability schedule for students who need extra help, and has resources for parents & students.
