This week we will spend a great deal of time reading in our book, The Bread Winner. The kids love the story and really want to get it finished. I am thrilled at their response to the story and the mature way they have been conducting themselves in Socratic Seminars.

    Life is good....

    Math - Mr. West

We are finishing up our work on the Comparing and Scaling unit this week. My goal is to give the unit test before the Thanksgiving holiday, but that will depend on whether we are fully prepared by then.

Due to an after school meeting on Tuesday there will be no after school math help this week.

    Social Studies -- Ms. Odermatt

I had a great first week with the 7th graders at Field School! I'm enjoying getting to know your children. We will learn about changes in Europe since ancient times especially the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period. There is a homework assignment due this Thursday. Students will be asking family members about their cultural heritage and traditions.

    Science - Mr. Boler

This week's focus will be on plant reproduction. Students will dissect a flower and create a booklet to show the structure and describes the function of a flower's reproductive parts.

On Tuesday students will take a open book/notes - group quiz on germination and transpiration topics.

Homework this week: RA9, Flowers to seeds - due Friday. Turn in Tuesday for 2 extra credit points.

    AVID decades of college dreams

AVID students will have their first guest speaker on Friday , November, 11th (Veteran's Day). In preparation for this event, students read a Star Tribune article titled "A Faith Fulfilled", by Steve Brandt. It describes what happened when Arthur and Edith Lee bought a home in the Field neighborhood. Arthur Lee "was a Minnesota native. He was also a World War 1 veteran He worked as a guard at the post office, and he and his wife were black." This Wednesday, students will read an additional Star Tribune article titled "A lesson in Racism that crosses Racial Lines", also by Steve Brandt. This article describes our speaker, Joe Senkyr-Minjares, a veteran himself, and owner of Pepitos restaurant on Chicago. The article explains how Joe became involved in planning an event of this past summer, commemorating the 80 year anniversary of the Lee family's experience in an all white south Minneapolis neighborhood. Parents are welcome to join us for our speaker. If possible, please email me ahead so that I know you are coming and plan enough seating.

New Field families can find out more about AVID at Field by viewing the information and student created video on our website Feel free to email me or stop by if you have further questions.
