Happy Veterans Day!

This week the students will be working with the first story in their Dystopian Literature unit. We will read and analyze Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. I have updated my website and added notes and a vocabulary list that goes with this unit.

Remind your student to bring their field trip slip in before the 16th. :)

There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.

We have officially kicked off History Day!  Students received a brief presentation from a History Day staff member which generated good discussion around the theme "Exploration, Encounter, Exchange".  Students brainstormed all the many things that can be explored, encountered and exchanged.  For example, science, music, and culture can be explored.  Racism, ideas, and religion can be encountered.  Language, goods, and diseases can be exchanged. Students will spend the next few Fridays brainstorming topic ideas.
As we continue with Unit 2, students will learn about the reasons and results of the War of 1812, along with an overview of the tools of diplomacy used during westward expansion.
No homework this week.
   - Ms. Odermatt
This week in science we will :
  • Learn about Darwin's Finches and Natural Selection
  • Play a survival of the fittest computer game
  • Finish the video and worksheet on Darwin's trip to the Galapagos Islands.
  • Learn about Artificial Selection through an activity about dogs.  (Pictured is Mr. Boler's dog Scruffy.  If you would like to introduce your dog to the class send a picture to leon.boler@mpls.k12.mn.us)

HOMEWORK: RA3 Natural Selection; Due Friday, turn in by Tuesday for a 4% bonus.

SCIENCE BOWL  Practice #5  is today - Monday 11/09.  Remember, no transportation is provided by the school. Practice ends at 3:45.

To review science content, make-up notebook entries, watch a video clip about any science topic of interest - go to the 7th grade science web page at:  http://www.bolerscience.net/

We took a quiz on translations and reflections last week, and students should get them back on Tuesday.

We ended last week, and will begin this week, by re-visiting differences between rational and irrational numbers, and then moving on to our next unit, a review on ratios and proportional reasoning (which they covered with Ms. Wilson last year). Later we'll start learning about simple and compound interest (always an interesting topic, and usually pretty new concepts to the students.).

The webpage lists what classwork we've done in class each day, references students' homework assignments, lists an availability schedule for students who need extra help, and has resources for parents & students.

Hello!  This is Trisha Hanson and Melanie Faulhaber and we are the co-chairs for the Hale & Field No Sale Fundraiser and we have kids at both Hale and Field.
We are excited to "Go Green" this year and kick-off the No Sale Fundraiser electronically, which will save us money in printing and postage.  All of the money that is raised from the No Sale fundraiser directly benefits our schools -- which helps cover the cost of art and technology, enrichment materials, technology licenses and improvements to both the Hale School and Field School Playgrounds.
Since 2003, the No-Sale Fundraiser has been the primary funding for our PTAs to donate to our Hale Elementary and Field Middle Schools.  We have raised over $350,000, which is about $30,000 per year for our schools.  This year our goal is $40,000, which is $20,000 per school, which is $4444 per grade and about $35 per student.
Our goal is aggressive as we try to keep our students at Hale and Field Schools from ringing your doorbell and asking you to purchase things you don't want or need (think expensive cookie dough and wrapping paper). These types of fundraisers are a lot of work, and only 30%-50% of the total sales go back to the school.
Instead, we simply ask you to make a donation in support of the wonderful quality education students in our community are receiving -- and see 100% of your donation going to these great schools and it is 100% tax deductible!
You can donate TODAY at https://givemn.org/ - search No Sale and donate directly to Hale or Field.  Scroll down to click on the Hale project or Field project, depending on which school you want to donate to.
All donations received now through midnight on November 12th, which is the official "Give to the Max Day" count toward the prizes given from GiveMN.  We have been in the top 3 Small Non-Profits for the last 2 years. Let's continue to build on this streak!
Our community makes us great!
Thank you for your continued support of Hale and Field's students.
Thank you so much for being a Hale& Field Super Hero!
