October 10, 2011

Oh my! It's already time for conferences. Our first conferences are this Thursday after school (3:00-7:30). The rest of the conferences are next Tuesday after school (3:00-7:30) and during the day on Wednesday (7:00-3:00). If you have forgotten the time of your conference, or still need to schedule one, please call the office (612-668-3640) and Traci will be happy to help you.

And now, an important announcement from our wonderful counselor, Wendy Wolff:

Mid quarter Progress reports for all students will be sent out early next week to each students' home. Progress reports help students, parents and teachers get a clear picture of how students are doing in their coursework BEFORE the quarter ends November 3, 2011, while there is still time to help students improve their grades. Please take some time to talk through your child's progress report together and celebrate the areas they are finding success and discuss some strategies to help them in areas they may be struggling in before their final grades are put on their transcript. Conferences are coming up soon and this will be a great time to discuss any concerns you may have about your child's progress!

Please note that we have added the 7th grade Site Council representatives, Dawn Nelson and Mike Wedl, to our contact list at the right, and also the PTA co-chair, Margaret Miller, and Community Representative Rich Flint as well.

We have finished our book!!! Kids were unhappy with the ending, so that will make for a good discussion. We will be having our final Socratic Seminar over Nothing But The Truth on Tuesday. I love listening to the insightful things the kids have to say.

Also on tap this week is a writing project. The kids will be writing a newspaper article telling the real story of Philip and Ms. Narwin. We began today in class and will write more on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday we will go to the computer lab to create our finished products.

The October reading logs went out today. They are on a festive orange paper.

Life is good!! See some of you Thursday at conferences.

    Math - Mr. West

Hello everybody. Right now we are wrapping up the Accentuate the Negative unit and reviewing for the test, which will be on Wednesday. We will be testing on operations with integers, absolute value, order of operations, the distributive property, and plotting on number lines and coordinate grids.

Next we start Comparing and Scaling, a unit on ratio, proportion and percent.

The math team met for the first time Friday after school. The next practice is this Friday during lunch and recess. We hope others will join us. Look for further updates on our meetings.

I will also be available for math help after school on most Tuesdays, starting on Tuesday, October 18th.

    Social Studies -- Ms. Harper

    Science - Mr. Boler

We will finish up our focus on Cells this week by learning more about cell organelles, cell types, and functions.

On Tuesday students will view microscopic diatoms, spirogyra, and volvox colonies.

The homework assignment (RA5, Cells Organelles) will given out on Monday. It's due Friday but may be turned in on Tuesday for 2 e.c. points = 4%.

The first science test of the year will be given on Tuesday October 23rd. Student's will receive a test review packet on Thursday October 13, We will go over answers to the review packet on Friday the 14th. To prepare themselves for the test, students should spend at least two hours (between Thursday and Tuesday) studying their review packet, vocabulary, notes, completed assignments, and, on the science web page, weekly powerpoints, content links, and the Foss web site.

Science Bowl is back! Science Bowl is an afterschool science team that meets every Monday from 2:45-3:45 starting on October 31st. At our practices we learn to play the Science Bowl game, train for the 2012 competition, and take scientific field trips. We study all branches of science and also math. Interested students should get a flyer and an application form from Mr. Boler or Ms. Schultz, the co-coaches. Application forms should be returned ASAP to reserve your spot!

    AVID decades of college dreams

Mr. Kambale, our lead tutor for AVID, is currently available to help students with academic classes after school on Tues., Thurs., and Fri. from 2:40-4:40. I am usually available on these days also, as well as most Mondays and during 7th and 8th grade lunch and recess.

I would like to encourage all AVID families to stop by the AVID room before or after your regular conference time. Conferences begin this Thursday in the evening. If you don't currently have a conference scheduled, be sure to contact the school. Conferences are an invaluable time to connect with families, even when your student is doing fantastic in all their classes. Due to the fact that I see students in three different grades, my conferences are on a drop in basis. Parents of returning AVID students should note that AVID has moved to room 117, across from the office.

Students who are new to Field are welcome to stop by the AVID room for an application.
