10/5/15
mch Happy Monday:
My goal for last weekend was to grade the mountain of papers I have. Unfortunately that did not happen, as I left the papers in the locked school.  Usually teachers can get into the school on Sunday because it is being used by Jacobs Well, again I was stopped in my quest to grade because the JW folks were at an alternate location.  Please know I am working double time and I will update the portal very soon.

This week in class we will focus on the story, The Chase by Annie Dillard. The students will read and discuss the signifiant moments. Additionally we will continue to work on our personal narratives.

Reading a good book is like taking a vacation from reality. xo

Social Studies
After researching and formulating their arguments, students will conduct a mock trial today to determine if the Arizona Immigration Law of 2010 is constitutional.  In small groups, they will take on the roles of plaintiff/defendant attorneys and judges.  There will be a reflection after the activity, due this Wednesday, October 7th. We will spend the rest of the week reviewing and completing a study guide to prepare for the Unit 1 test, which is this Friday, October 9th.

SCIENCE BOWL
If you are a 7th or 8th grader who enjoys science and math, fast paced competitions, and working with others, this is the team for you.  Like other teams, we practice together, do some training on our own, and compete against other Minnesota schools. Get a sign up form from Mr. Boler or Mr. Iverson or download it off the 7th grade science web page.  Practices are held every Monday from 10/12 through 12/14.

    Math
10/5/15
This week students will receive back their quizzes on LT #2.3  (adding and subtracting positive and negative rational numbers) & #2.4 (absolute value).  Our next quiz, on LT #2.5 (Coordinate Grid) and #2.7 (multiplying and dividing positive and negative rational numbers) will be tomorrow, on Tuesday, Oct 6th.

Our next topics will be applying our new knowledge of integers and rational numbers with utilization of the proper order-of-operations, and exploring the associative and distributive properties.

Students who received a score of 70% or below on Learning Target quizzes need to re-take them to improve their score and to receive a passing grade showing that they understand the learning target.

* In order to do a re-take, students need to KEEP their old quiz, and BRING it in, with the correct answers (with explanations) on a SEPARATE SHEET on the items they missed. This will qualify them "ready to re-take" the quiz. Re-takes are to be done outside of regular class time, and can be done before-school, after-school, during recess, or during B.E.S.T. class. Students should make arrangements with Mr. Usem to do the re-takes. Students will have 2 weeks from when the quizzes are handed back to complete the re-take. (Deadlines for LT#2.1 and LT#2.2 are: Monday, Oct 12)  (Deadlines for LT#2.3 and LT#2.4 are: Tuesday, Oct 20)
- students can come and work with Mr. Usem a variety of times each day, if they need extra help. Available times are posted in the classroom, as well as on Mr. Usem's webpage.

      - Mr. Usem

The webpage lists what classwork we've done in class each day, references students' homework assignments, lists an availability schedule for students who need extra help, and has resources for parents & students.
