This week we will be working on how
writers create characters that we can relate to.

I will be out Wednesday-Friday for a family funeral.  Mrs. Meyer will take my place, if you could remind your students that work continues that would make Mrs. Meyer's job and mine a lot easier.

Happy Fall!

We are conducting research on the Arizona immigration law of 2010 in order for students to take on the roles of attorneys and judges.  In small groups, each side will make their case and determine whether the law is constitutional.
Students will complete a written reflection after the case study as homework which is due on Friday.  We will review on Thursday and have our final Unit 1 assessment on Friday.

Math

Last week we had a quiz on Learning Targets #1.5. (coordinate graphing) Students should be getting these quizzes back on Tuesday.

This week we have a very busy week. We should be taking one more Learning Target (#1.6) quiz on multiplication & division of integers and rational numbers on Wednesday or Thursday, and finishing up the unit by the end of the week. "Order of Operations" study, as well as learning the Associative and Distributive properties, is proving challenging for many students.

After finishing, we will do a little review, before we take the final Benchmark exam for the unit.

Students who do not receive passing scores and who need to re-take Learning Target quizzes need to make arrangements do so (outside of class) as soon as possible after a quiz. Students should talk to Mr. Usem to make arrangements.

In Reader's Workshop this week students will finish a comprehension unit focused on finding the subject, main idea and supporting details. The next unit contains exercises that help students learn the new vocabulary words from the story. Students will test each other on the Words Their Way spelling sort for the week. Finally, students will read independently for 20 minutes and write in a Reader's Response Journal.
