7th Grade Newsletter 7th Grade ROCKS!
September 6, 2012

We hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the great weather over the Labor Day weekend. The seventh graders got off to a wonderful start last week. Our first binder check was today during advisory and by far the vast majority of the students have their binders set up in a highly organized fashion. We will work with those who need help getting up to speed and also continue monitoring to help everyone stay organized.

We could really use a lot more tissue and wipes to make it through the long school year. If you can help out by contributing we'd really appreciate it. With allergies so bad this year we are already going through quite a bit of tissue.

Important announcement: Picture Day will be on Monday, September 19.

If you know anyone who is not receiving our newsletter please have them contact Dan West using the email address among those at the right.

We had our first Socratic Seminar. For the most part everyone participated. A few students chose to be silly but it was the first week of school and I have faith they will settle down by our next discussion.

This week we will spend a bit of time in the computer lab learning about the Star Spangled Banner. We have some information but when we discussed its history today many students were not sure the information they had was truth or myth. By the end of the week we will know it all!!!

We will begin to learn about the plot diagram and how it shapes the stories we read. We will also add more literary terms to our repertoire.

    Math - Mr. West

Hello everybody. I'm enjoying getting to know your children, and have been reading the math letters they wrote me to start out the year. Getting to know 120 new people in a short time is a daunting task.

Last week we explored integers focusing on number line models. Now we are moving into gaining a clear understanding of how addition and subtraction work when you include negative numbers in your calculations. For many students this notion is very confusing at first and takes some time to absorb.

By Thursday evening some initial grades will be posted in the Parent Portal.

    Social Studies -- Ms. Harper

Good Afternoon. Today in World Studies students presented their "create Your Own World" posters. Wednesday 9/7 students will be introduced to the World Studies Standards and Learning Targets for September. Thursday we will be reading from the world studies textbook. Friday students will get a geography assignment which is due Monday 9/12.

    Science - Mr. Boler

This week we will do some more practice with the metric system and then we will begin our 1.5 quarter unit on the Diversity of Life.

Over the next several weeks we will be studying life. We will try to figure out how living things are similar to each other and how they are different from each other. We will study the characteristics of living things that separate them from things that are not alive.

There will not be a homework assignment this week.
