Welcome Field Mice Families!

High School Registration Nights Coming Up!
Students received a handout about Minneapolis Public High School registration nights on Friday last week in Global Studies.  At registration night students will be able to register for classes, talk to teachers, look into sports, clubs, and other extracurriculars, and get acquainted with their new school.  See Mr. Kafura if you need a handout.

Valleyfair Requirements
In order to go on the Valleyfair trip at the end of the year students cannot have any F's in their core classes.  We do recognize that for some students this may be difficult even if they are putting in the effort.  We also recognize that our entire focus this year has been on improvement for all of our students, so we do have an appeal process for students that may have an F at the end of 2nd semester.  If a student does have an F they may appeal to an 8th grade teacher to still be allowed to go.  In their appeal the student must give evidence of their effort to improve (ex. meeting with the teacher for extra help, taking advantage of retake opportunities, etc.).

To Kill a Mockingbird

This week we begin the trial of Tom Robinson. Students will be reading chapters 16-18 this week while recording evidence from each of the witnesses:
(Heck Tate, Bob Ewell, Mayella Ewell, and Tom Robinson).
Students will begin evaluating the claims made by each witness and prepare for our Socratic Seminar next week!

I have been very impressed with student behavior, maturity, and participation through the first week of Sexual Health lessons.  Keep it up this week!  Regular Global Studies classes will resume next week.

Additionally, with high school registration nights coming up I would like to take this opportunity to remind families and students that AP Human Geography is a course option for high school freshmen.  Students do not need my recommendation to get into or take the course, but should keep in mind it is a college level Geography class.  I am happy to talk with anyone wondering whether they would be a good fit for the AP course.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Dear Eighth Grader and Family,

Minneapolis Public Schools would like to invite you to be a Fast Track Scholar this summer!  This exciting program provides current 8th grade (going into 9th) students with the opportunity to meet new high school classmates and begin earning high school elective credits.  The goal is to prepare students for a smooth transition to high school. In order to participate, students must meet ALC criteria such as not meeting grade level academic standards, English Language Learner, or having inconsistent school attendance which significantly impacts achievement. AVID students also qualify to attend Fast Track Scholars, and teachers/counselors may recommend students.
