For the Week of December 1st, 2014

Welcome to the 8th Grade Newsletter

Please continue to check your student portal to stay up to date on grades and missing assignments.  There has been a bit of a slip in students both turning things in and taking advantage of re-do opportunities.  Both are important pieces of the learning process.

We need parent chaperones for the school dance on December 5th from 6-8:30.  You would be checking students in, manning the food, or making sure all are safe.

If you are able to help, please email Erin Lindsay at Erin.Lindsay@mpls.k12.mn.us.

English Language Arts (ELA)

Poetry / Spoken Word

This week we begin our poetry and spoken word unit. Students will be writing a collection of poems in their Writer's Notebook for a final assignment. Students will read our new anchor text, Bronx Masquerade, in class to help inspire their writing.  Students will also be participating in "Open Mic Fridays" to share their poetry!

We have now completed our unit on The Giver. Students must check the portal to make sure they have their final "This I Believe" essay and recordings turned in.
Make plans with Mr. S. if you need an extension.

Final drafts will be returned by the end of this week. Students are expected to complete a redo action plan and another draft if their grade is below a '3'.

The link to the November Online Independent Reading Survey is on the right-hand side of our class webpage.
Complete the online survey by Friday, December 5th!

Intermediate Algebra
We will be starting our fourth unit of the year.  Students will be learning about the different equation forms of linear functions and how to convert between them.  They will also learn about scatterplots and lines of best fit.

Students will be getting back their Unit 3 Assessment this week.  If students want to retake any of the learning targets, they must complete an Action Retake Plan and turn it in by Monday, December 8th.  The retakes will be given Wednesday, December 10th and Thursday December 11th.

MANY students have not been getting their homework done on time.  It is very important that students complete their work the night it is assigned.  We go through the answers the next day and the students have an opportunity to ask questions.  It is a way for them to see if they can correctly complete the work on their own.
