Week of February 24, 2014

Winter's last call for Tissues!
8th grade has almost used up all of the tissues students were kind enough to donate at the beginning of the year.  If you have a box or two at home you would be willing to donate it would be much appreciated!
Language Arts
notepad We've got a big week in language arts as we're getting toward the end of the novel. On Monday, we'll finish our reader's theater for chapter 19 and discuss chapters 20-21. There will be quizzes on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday we'll take some time to verify our understanding of what's been happening up through chapter 23, and on Friday we'll bring the "Tea Party" scene from chapter 24 to life.

Please complete missing assignments and take missed quizzes. Even one missing assignment can really affect a grade. I want the grades to accurately represent the progress each person has made and the skills you all have. Don't cheat yourself out of that by neglecting to turn in homework or make up quizzes. I'm available before or after school, during recess, or at study hall on Thursdays. Just come see me to schedule a time.

There is a letter this week (letter 10), due on your contracted day. A copy of the letter is available on my website, if you need it.

Have a great week!

Good Morning,

The students are moving into the next unit which is on Exponential Relationships.  It will be a short unit where we will hopefully take the unit test in a few weeks.

I have entered all of the homework assignments and am disappointed to see all the missing work.  I have spoken with the students on a number of occasions and still the work is not coming in.  Please sit down with your child and check the portal together.  If they have missing work, they can get it from my room or on my website: http://field.mpls.k12.mn.us/lindsay

With the snow day Friday all of our lessons have moved back a day.  This means the homework from last week is now due on Tuesday and our test has moved to next Monday.

Monday: Students will be looking at our last Arab Spring case study in Syria.  Students now have three case studies and should be prepared to compare and contrast them for the test.

Tuesday and Wednesday:  Over the course of these two days we will be looking at the treatment of women in the Middle East.  We will also consider the advances of women's rights in the Middle East.

Thursday: Today will be the only day in class students will have to work on their study guides.  Students should come to class with questions about things they are unsure of and all of their notes for this unit.

Friday:  We will finish our review with a Jeopardy game to prepare for the test.  Look for the link to be added to the calendar for students to be able to use at home over the weekend.
Reader's Workshop

   Good morning!
Our work this week will lead us to writing about texts we read using the P.E.E.L. writing structure, while finishing our writing with Connections we can make to the text.  If the text Clicks, comprehension is successful, while a Clunk as a place where comprehension is not as successful as the reader needs it to be.

The Connections that we will ask students to make will continue to work well with our "Click and Clunk" strategy as students will have to decide if the reason for their "Clunk" is because they do not have a Connection to the part of the text that is a "Clunk".  We will continue to look for places to have students make links to other parts of the "Pause to Connect" strategy as they work with more complex texts in their core classes such as science, social studies, and language arts.

Look for mid quarter grades to be up on the portal!

In advisory 8th grade students will be starting Project ALERT.  This is a drug and alcohol awareness and prevention program, which our 8th graders would not receive if we did not provide it through our advisory classes.  Links to the parent site will be provided in later newsletters.  If you have any questions about this curriculum please contact your student's advisory teacher.

Please follow this link for more information on the Project Alert curriculum:

High school requests need to be submitted by ALL  8th grade families before February 28! Please watch the following video from Wendy Wolff:
As of last week, only about 10% of our 8th grade students have submitted their request. Even if you are requesting your attendance area school, we are still asking you to submit your request!
It takes 5 minutes and can be accessed online at http://highschoolrequest.mpls.k12.mn.us/HSapplication/intro.aspx

If you are exploring schools outside of MPS, we still recommend you submit a request as a back -up plan. Please contact Wendy Wolff if you have any questions about the request process. I will be meeting with students who have not submitted  requests during the week of February 23.

News from Julie Peterson, School Social Worker

Dear Parents/Guardians of Field Middle School Students:

The Minnesota Twins recognize that good performance in school begins with good attendance and they're excited to team up with Minnesota Middle School Association (MMSA) to create the Perfect Attendance Incentive Program.

To become eligible, students must simply have "perfect attendance" for the 2013-2014 school year during quarters 3&4.   The reason the Minnesota Twins and MMSA have established this program is because they recognize the importance of having students in each class every day.

What are the Twins offering? Field Middle School will select one student to attend the game against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, May 17, 2014. The Twins will provide 4 tickets for that student and up to three parents/guardians/siblings to attend.  We would like to thank both the MMSA and the Twins for supporting the Attendance Incentive Program and our students.

If you have any questions regarding this incentive program, please feel free to call Mr. Norlin-Weaver at 612-668-3640 or Ms. Julie Peterson at 612-668-3655.

Sincerely,

Steve Norlin-Weaver                                       Julie Peterson
