For the Week of March 9th 2015

Welcome to the 8th Grade Newsletter

Model UN Wednesday!

8th grade Model UN takes place this week Wednesday!  Students must have a completed position paper to participate.  Students are also highly encouraged to dress nicely on that day.  Mr. Kafura is available for after school help Monday and Tuesday.

MCA Prep

MCAs are quickly approaching and some classes have begun MCA preparation.  Please help with your student's success by helping ensure they get a good night's sleep before the testing days and that they also eat breakfast.  We know all of our 8th graders are capable of doing well and wish them the best on their MCA tests.

End of 3rd Quarter

Believe it or not we are 3 weeks away from the end of 3rd quarter.  Please continue to check the portal with your student to ensure they have no missing work and are taking advantage or retake/correction opportunities.  It is better to take care of things now rather than scramble the last week of the quarter.

Students are working on a writing assignment this week to rewrite

a scene from the book from a different character's perspective.

The objective is to show that character's point of view by reflecting on that character's personality, experiences, and thinking.

Due Tuesday, March 17th in ink!

Intermediate Algebra

Well it it that time of year when we start preparing for the MCA.  Most of this week's homework will be around reviewing all content we have learned this year. The Math MCA will be given the week of March 16th.  It is important that the students do their best.  If your child's goal is to take Geometry next year then it is important that he/she meet the standard on the MCA.

Model UN is Wednesday!  It is extremely important students make good use of their class time so they are prepared for the conference.  Unprepared students will not be able to take part in the conference and will be completing an alternate research paper the day of the conference instead.  Mr. Kafura is available before and after school Monday and Tuesday for help getting ready.  Remember 100% student completion of position papers and participation Wednesday equals Mr. Kafura in a mohawk.

Monday: Morning classes will have today to finish revising and editing their position papers.  Afternoon classes will be participating in a Cookie debate to prepare for the conference.

Tuesday: Morning classes be organizing their Model UN materials and practicing their position paper speeches.  Afternoon classes will have this as their last day to finish revising and editing their position papers.

Wednesday: Model UN Conference! Students are highly encouraged to dress nicely today (think picture day).

Valley Fair Requirements

In order to attend the Valleyfair trip at the end of the school year 8th graders must not have any failing semester grades for their core classes (LA, Science, Math, and Social Studies).  However, the 8th grade team has been emphasizing showing improvement and second chances all school year, so if students can show evidence of their effort and improvement during the semester they may appeal a failing grade and still have the opportunity to go on the trip.  The 8th grade team feels this is the best way to continue to help motivate and prepare our students to make the transition to high school and celebrate the achievements of all students.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
