8th Grade

For the week of
May 1st

Welcome Field Mice Families!

Valleyfair Requirements
In order to go on the Valleyfair trip at the end of the year students cannot have any F's in their core classes.  We do recognize that for some students this may be difficult even if they are putting in the effort.  We also recognize that our entire focus this year has been on improvement for all of our students, so we do have an appeal process for students that may have an F at the end of 2nd semester.  If a student does have an F they may appeal to an 8th grade teacher to still be allowed to go.  In their appeal the student must give evidence of their effort to improve (ex. meeting with the teacher for extra help, taking advantage of retake opportunities, etc.).

English Language Arts (ELA)

To Kill a Mockingbird

This week students will complete final discussions on the
falling action and conclusion of
To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM).
Students need to have completed reading the remaining chapters, 27-31, by now.
We will have a final quiz, essay reviewing significant moments from the text, and a book-to-film comparison!

Hello Everyone!  I was very impressed with the effort given last week and how much progress our students made with factoring, which can be a tricky area for a lot of students.  This week, we will begin using our knowledge of factoring to solve quadratic equations, while also examining graphs and learning the vocabulary of quadratics.
Monday Introduction to Quadratic Equations#1-20
TuesdaySpecial Cases of Quadratic Equations (Factoring)#1-20
Wednesday The Quadratic Formula#1-20
ThursdayPractice Solving Quadratic Equations #1-20

Don't forget!  Students are always welcome to retake any Learning Target Quizzes for which they did not meet the standard so that they may meet it.  Students must meet the standard on every LTQ, achieve a C or better in the class, and score "Meets" or better on the 8th grade MCA to advance at the end of the year.  I am available before school, during advisory, during lunch and recess, and after school on Fridays to facilitate retakes.

Dear Eighth Grader and Family,

Minneapolis Public Schools would like to invite you to be a Fast Track Scholar this summer!  This exciting program provides current 8th grade (going into 9th) students with the opportunity to meet new high school classmates and begin earning high school elective credits.  The goal is to prepare students for a smooth transition to high school. In order to participate, students must meet ALC criteria such as not meeting grade level academic standards, English Language Learner, or having inconsistent school attendance which significantly impacts achievement. AVID students also qualify to attend Fast Track Scholars, and teachers/counselors may recommend students.
