8th Grade Newsletter - April 10, 2017

8th Grade
For the week of
April 10th

Welcome Field Mice Families!
Beginning of 4th Quarter!
This week marks the beginning of the 4th (and last) quarter of 8th grade.  Set a goal for this quarter that will help get you ready for high school (checking your portal once a week, writing assignments/LTs in your planner, setting aside time to review, etc.).

Valleyfair Requirements
In order to go on the Valleyfair trip at the end of the year students cannot have any F's in their core classes.  We do recognize that for some students this may be difficult even if they are putting in the effort.  We also recognize that our entire focus this year has been on improvement for all of our students, so we do have an appeal process for students that may have an F at the end of 2nd semester.  If a student does have an F they may appeal to an 8th grade teacher to still be allowed to go.  In their appeal the student must give evidence of their effort to improve (ex. meeting with the teacher for extra help, taking advantage of retake opportunities, etc.).

English Language Arts (ELA)
To Kill a Mockingbird
Students will continue reading Part 2: chapters 12-15 this week, discussing and tracking significant events; the growth and change of different characters in the novel.  Students are also working on writing complete academic paragraphs to show their understanding: this includes a topic sentence, detailed explanation, specific evidence, quotes, and coming sentence.
Next week, the trial of Tom Robinson begins!

Dear Eighth Grader and Family,
Minneapolis Public Schools would like to invite you to be a Fast Track Scholar this summer!  This exciting program provides current 8th grade (going into 9th) students with the opportunity to meet new high school classmates and begin earning high school elective credits.  The goal is to prepare students for a smooth transition to high school. In order to participate, students must meet ALC criteria such as not meeting grade level academic standards, English Language Learner, or having inconsistent school attendance which significantly impacts achievement. AVID students also qualify to attend Fast Track Scholars, and teachers/counselors may recommend students.
