For the Week of October 13th, 2014

Welcome to the 8th Grade Newsletter

Conferences are coming up on October 14th, 15th, and 23rd.  Conferences will run just like 7th grade where you sign up for a half hour time slot and rotate through the four core teachers.  If you need to sign up for a conference slot please contact Mr. Kafura.  E-mail is best (brian.kafura@mpls.k12.mn.us)

Students will be taking the EXPLORE test on November 11th.  This is a preparation test for the ACT, however without taking the test students cannot receive a high school diploma from a Minnesota High School.  More information will be coming out as we prepare for it, but if you have any specific questions please contact Mr. Yohe.

English Language Arts (ELA)

The Importance of Independent Reading

Every Friday students use part of their ELA period to reflect on, record about, and read their independent reading chapter books. At the end of every month students submit a one-page-minimum reflection on what they are reading.  These reflections will include a variety of choices each month.
For September students chose a focus question to reflect on their independent reading.  At the end of October students will create a visual representation for their chapter book, creating a display for all Field students outside room 108.
Remember to use our Independent Reading  webpage when you need suggestions for new books to read!

We are constantly adding to our classroom library, so if you would like to donate any young adult and age--appropriate texts, our avid readers would be more than grateful!

I'm looking forward to talking with so many of you at conferences this week - the students are doing well and showing a lot of learning in science class.

Our schedule for this week:

Convection demonstration - how convection moves heat through the air.  Discussion and short video clip of lake turnover and density based layering of lakes.

Review of the three methods of heat transfer and small group discussion regarding the process of convection.

Have a happy and safe few days away from school!

Mr. Iverson
Global Studies
Apologies for the section from last week, clearly my changes did not save like I thought they would.

Missing Work and Assessment Fixes: I will accept missing work and assessment fixes up until October 30th.  For the unit test fixes students must figure out the right answer and write me a statement why that is the correct answer to get points back for multiple choice.  For the short answer and map questions students should just add to or adjust their answers as necessary.

Monday and Tuesday:  We will be watching a video on the Inca and Machu Picchu and completing a video guide.  I will be checking student Cornell notes from last week on Monday and we will use whatever time we have left on Tuesday to review them.

Look for a quiz on the topics we've covered so far this unit next week.

News from the PTA

"Support Field, Support the Students, Support the Teachers and Support Reading"

Field Community School's Book Fair is

Monday, November 17 at Galleria Barnes and Noble in Edina from 6 to 8 pm.

Field Student will be performing as part of our wonderful Music Program

For every book you purchase at the Barnes and Noble Book Fair, a percentage goes to bring new and teacher chosen books into our school.  We all understand that schools need our support.  You can come and shop November 17, or go on line that week, and do your part to bring the gift of books and reading to Field.

Thank you all so very much!

Do you like to downhill ski?

Minneapolis Public Schools has a fantastic downhill ski racing team that competes around the state against other schools.   We are actively seeking to add seventh and eighth grade students to our team for the 2014-15 season. We invite you to attend a parent-athlete information meeting at Southwest High School on Monday, October 20th at 6:30PM in the school cafeteria. If you would like to learn more about our team immediately, please check out our website:
And you can always give Mark Conway a call with your questions. Start young so you can ski with the best when you are older.
