8th Grade News for the
Week of October 14, 2013
Conferences start tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday)!  In the link below please locate your student's name to verify the time and date you have signed up for.  Please let Brian Kafura, Global Studies teacher,  know via e-mail (brian.kafura@mpls.k12.mn.us) if that time no longer works for you, or if something has come up that makes it impossible to keep your conference appointment.
Conferences this year will be held in room 106. All four core teachers will be in the same room and throughout your half hour time slot you will get to meet with each of us for about 7 minutes.  Due to this format we are not able to accommodate walk-ins and do ask that you only show up for your assigned time slot.
We are excited to meet with and discuss your student's progress with you!
Science Bowl for 7th or 8th grade students starts today, Monday, October 14th.   Science Bowl is for students who like science and math, fast paced competitions, and working with others.  Please check with Mr. Iverson if you have any questions regarding Science Bowl.
Language Arts
notepad     With our short week, we will be focusing on a shared inquiry discussion.  During these discussion times, students will be working on citing textual evidence.
Looking forward to seeing you at conferences!
Intermediate Algebra

Hello! On Friday we finished our statistic unit, which means it is now time for our first test.

Monday and Tuesday

: Review/Study days! The test is on the entire statistics unit.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: No School!

Just a preview of the next week: On
Monday we will have half of the time for any unanswered questions and half of the time we will start our test. On

we will finish the test for the entire period. Wednesday will be the start of our new unit!

-- When you get back from your break on Monday you should bring questions that you want to go over before the test.

Study hard this week!

Ms. Petron

Science update for the very short week:
Monday:  Discuss homework from last week.  Finish our learning about convection in air and water.

Tuesday:  Review game covering all topics to this point in the quarter.

Global Studies
As we have a short week we are going to continue working with cultures of the Americas and how they are influenced by geography.  This week we will focus more on cultures of Central and South America and consider how people have adapted to live in those areas.
A reminder, the packet on Native cultures is due on Tuesday this week (students had time Thursday and Friday in class to work on this last week).  Also, if students would like to do test corrections they may do those directly on the test to earn half points back for items they missed.  For multiple choice questions they must select the correct answer and write a brief statement why that is the correct answer.  For the short answer segment they should either fix up their answer or write a new response.

Reader's Workshop
This week, we will be continuing to work on "Charting the Text".  This work has been extremely challenging for our students, and I am extremely excited to see many of our students beginning to achieve the first part of this very important learning target.
Our focus will be on students reading text, and identifying what the author is saying (what are the words in the text?) as students work to develop understanding around three questions:
1) What is the part of the text about (Big Idea)?
2) What did the author want me to focus on in this section?
3) What did the author want me to learn from reading this section?

Attention Field School Parents! First quarter is definitely underway and staff and students are working hard!  Mid quarter grades have been entered and are available for you to review on the parent portal.  Please look over your child's grades and recognize their hard work as well as areas that may need some improvements.
First quarter ends November 1,  so there is still time for students to talk with teachers, review tests and turn in missing assignments before final quarter grades are entered.  Middle school is a time when students need to take more responsibility for their work and grades and set personal goals that  will be challenging and realistic.  Parents can help students by asking them to:
·         reflect on their performance
·         identify areas they want to improve and
·         make a plan to achieve their quarter goals
If you have questions about grades or the parent portal, please contact our School Counselor, Wendy Wolff. She is at Field Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We look forward to a continued partnership with parents to help all of our students reach their full potential at Field!
