Greetings!

I must have blinked. The last time I wrote in this newsletter was in the fall. But don't despair, you will quickly learn about the Foundation's work this year assisting the students and staff at Hale and Field schools.

In addition, a HUGE thank you is in order to all the people who volunteered tireless hours with this year's Spring Fling celebration, and to those that are saying good bye to the Foundation after years of dedicated service. More on that below.

Until next fall, I hope you and your family have a great summer and thank you for your continued support of the Hale-Field School Foundation. We would not exist without you.

Sincerely,

Curt Gutoske, Hale-Field School Foundation President

The Hale-Field Foundation's Mission

To ensure that students are given an opportunity to expand
their learning beyond the traditional boundaries of
public education and to provide enrichment opportunities
that impact the most students.

Funding Approvals for 2010-11
The Foundation approved over $26,000 for programs and improvements at Hale and Field during the 2010-11 school year. Specifically, funding was approved for the following programs:
  • Hale After-School Instrumental Music ($4,000)
  • Hale and Field Promethean Boards ($9,400)*
  • Field Science Bowl Teams ($1,250)
  • Hale Artist-In-Residence Program ($700)
  • Hale Parent Liaison for 2011-12 school year ($9,000)
  • Field professional development training - AVID program ($2,500)

*Funded through the 2010 Spring Fling "fund-a-need" auction.

The Foundation uses the following criteria when considering a funding request:
  • To ensure that students are given an opportunity to expand their learning beyond the traditional boundaries of the public education.
  • To provide enrichment opportunities beyond the yearly school budget.
  • To support proposals that impact the most students.
  • To support the Hale-Field campuses equally over a multi-year period.
  • To support school-wide goals and priorities.
  • To ensure the request does not unduly impair the Foundation from funding future requests.
Hale Parent Liaison
The largest single item funded by the Foundation was the Parent Liaison position at Hale School for the 2011-12 school year. Hale's 2011-12 budget was cut significantly by the school district, which forced Hale to make some very difficult staffing choices. Without the help of Foundation, Hale would have had to potentially eliminate the Parent Liaison. This position is critical to Hale's success and has a diverse range of duties including: coordinating the over 400 volunteers at Hale; making connections between colleges, community organizations and businesses to Hale; securing resources for teachers and students; and assisting the After school Learning Program (ALC), among others. Maintaining this position allows Hale's students to maximize their learning through the resources and talents that are coordinated by the Parent Liaison. Funding for the 2011-12 Parent Liaison position will be 90 percent from the Hale-Field School Foundation and 10 percent from the Field, Regina, Northrop Neighborhood Group.

HFSF 2009 banner Spring Fling 2011!

The 5th annual Spring Fling was once again a huge hit! We loved the new location at Our Lady of Peace and it was great to see over 300 supporters turn out to celebrate Hale and Field schools.

This year's event raised over $35,000! That is absolutely tremendous. All of the money goes directly to Hale and Field schools via the Hale and Field PTAs (25% each) and the Hale-Field Foundation (50%). In addition, $5,600 of the money raised will specifically benefit the Hale and Field instrumental music programs (the Fund-A-Need) to increase student access to the programs, help purchase new and replacement instruments, and to maintain these vital programs that are so much a part of Hale and Field's core values.

The Spring Fling is possible because certain people are willing to step up and take on this huge challenge for our schools. These people are Amy Raspberry (Spring Fling Chair) and her platoon of committee chairs. They deserve all the credit and we, the Foundation, are severely in debt to them. Thank you, thank you, thank you. If you would like to be a part (small or big) of next year's Spring Fling, please contact Amy Raspberry, Spring Fling Chair, at amy.raspberry@mpls.k12.mn.us or 612-817-1840.

Good Bye and Hello Thank you
The Foundation is saying good bye to two of its members. Dr. Joyce Bell, assistant principal at Field, is retiring at the end of this school year and will also be leaving the Foundation. For the last four years, Dr. Bell has been an important link between the Foundation and the Field school administration, and has brought a great depth of perspective and knowledge to the discussion and decisions of the Foundation. We will miss you Dr. Bell.

Also leaving the Foundation is Mary Catherine Halasz, Field Language Arts teacher. "MC" had the longest tenure of any board member, dating back to the beginning of the Foundation in the mid 1990s. MC's years of dedication, critical insights, and her passion for our schools and students will be dearly missed. While no longer on the Foundation, MC can still be found in the classroom at Field School making sure Field's 7th graders are among the smartest in the city.

Joining the Foundation will be Field's new assistant principal Reggie Johnson. Reggie comes to the Foundation and Field school from Olson Middle School in north Minneapolis. Reggie has been with the Minneapolis School District 26 years and we look forward to Reggie becoming a key member of the Foundation next fall.
