Hello Field Community!

I am honored to be a part of the staff at Field Community School in my role as a grades 5-8 Reading Specialist.  I have many years of experience teaching Middle School Reading and as a K-5 Literacy Coach in the Minneapolis Public Schools.  I earned my M. A. Degree and K-12 Reading Consultant license from the University of Minnesota. Although I am from N.D. I have lived in the Twin Cities area for over 25 years.  My son is a graduate of Southwest High School and currently attends Augsburg College. We live in southwest Minneapolis with our golden retriever.

Course Objectives: (These objectives are based on the Minnesota English Language Arts/Reading standards)

Students will acquire skills to:

  1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
  2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
  3. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone
  4. Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.

Course Outline

The Reader’s Workshop focuses on four key components.  By working hard at the following four things, the students will accelerate their reading achievement.  The following descriptors are some of the main points needed to understand what we will focus on in this class, there are many other things that we will work on in order to accelerate reading achievement for all students.
