 Choir & Guitar
Hello Field Families, and HAPPY OCTOBER!
If you haven't done so already, please take a moment to view my teacher website:  http://fieldchoirguitar.weebly.com/
Here you will find class information about each choir and guitar related class, all required forms, performance dates, multimedia from past performances, and the "concert report" assignment if your child misses a required (home) concert.  I am currently compiling videos, pictures, and audio from last year to update the website.  If you have any great content from last years performances you would be willing to share so I can put it up on the website, I would really appreciated it!
ALL CLASSES - MUSIC SHIRTS! ( 5/6 grade T-Shirts, 7/8 grade Polo )
Mrs. Hotchkiss and I need to place the Music Shirt order THIS WEEK.   Please make sure to get all shirt forms in!  ALL FIELD MUSIC STUDENTS NEED A MUSIC SHIRT FOR CONCERTS!
Beginning Guitar students have begun working in the Purple Method book.  5/6 Intermediate level students are working on reviewing 1st Position notes and the basic open chords (single page handout).   7/8 Interm. students are working on C Major Scales in 1st, 2nd, and 5th position, Power/Barre Chords, and the first page of every assigned song.
1. RENTALS: I have not recieved all the Guitar Rental Forms from students who have indicated they need to rent.   Students are not supposed to bring their rented guitar home until they have turned in the Rental form and Fee.  If you have any questions or concerns, financially or otherwise, please just send me an email.  Scholarships are available for those in need, it simply needs to be communicated to me.
2. Please make sure you are monitoring your childs guitar practice.   ALL guitar students should be practicing the music we are working on in class for a MINIMUM of 15 minutes every day they do not have regular guitar class, including the weekend.  It is also important that they take additional time to "play" (whatever they want, just MAKE SOUND) either before or after their 15 minutes of focused practice.
3. The first round of assessements has been completed in the 5/6 grade classes, and already there are some students I am strongly recommending sign up for a time to work with me privately (during recess or after school).  The sign up sheet is right outside my classroom door.   These brief one-on-one sessions are worth up to 5 bonus points, depending upon the focus and productivity of the student.
"MUSIC X ENSEMBLE" (Music Explorations Class)
We just completed our brief introductory unit on Rhythm, which included hand drums, drum set, and xylophones.    This coming week we will start with UKELELE, with the intention of starting GUITAR the following week, and then PIANO.   After these introductory units, students will then be finalizing their PRIMARY and SECONDARY instruments to prepare for the upcoming concert (TUESDAY, JAN. 23rd, 2018).   It is at that time that any students who pick guitar will be assigned a rental instrument (if they don't have their own). Only students who intend on having GUITAR as their primary instrument AND have paid the Rental Fee will be assigned a school-owned guitar to take home and practice.
PAST DUE CLASSWORK:   I have a number of students who have not turned in worksheet packets that have been past due for over 1 week.   This information is very important as applies to literally every instrument we cover in the classroom.  I have extra copies and will make myself available to help any students to complete these assignments.
VocalEssence is a world renown choral music organization based in Minneapolis that produces an exciting schedule of choral music performances and events every year throughout the Twin Cities.   "WITNESS" is one of their educational programs that celebrates the contributions of African Americans to overall American Culture and Music.
Teaching artists from the local arts community will come into ALL of our CHOIR classrooms to work directly with students, and this year the focus is going to be on both the HARLEM RENAISSANCE and LANGSTON HUGHES.   The culminating event is a daytime field trip on TUESDAY, FEB. 20th, 2018 to ORCHESTRA HALL to enjoy an exciting musical performance lead by the VocalEssence Chorus, High school singers, and guest performers.   For more info, visit the official website below.
No student will be turned away from participating in choir or guitar class because of a lack of funds.  If your family has any financial concerns, please just indicate that you need a scholarship on any of the forms and the generous donations from the Field Community will cover it.
If you have any further questions/concerns, please email me directly.   If your inquiry is time-sensitive, please send a reminder email if you have not heard back from me in less than 48 hours.

PE: Fitness for Life
Outstanding Students at Field School!

As you have heard, all students successfully completed the Fitness
Assessment Test (endurance jog, push-up, curl up and flexibility). The
primary purpose of the test was to assist your child in starting
life-long habits of regular activity.  Although, there are many ways

to asses student's fitness level, the test results can can be used by
students to improve overall fitness. The test results helps the
teacher to design and tailor fitness to the needs of the individual

"Life long habits"

Current unit is Flag Football.  Passing with accuracy, running without
being tackled and guarding techniques will be taught.

Wednesday, October 4th is the National Walk and Bike to School Day!  Please join  communities around the country to support and build healthy habits and promote safe routes to school.  Better yet, rather than a one day event lets encourage students to build daily and life long habits.

Parents... please stop in the gym anytime while visiting Field.
You are welcomed to participate in the activities.  No experience needed.

At Field, stickers and drawings will be issued on arrival for those walking or biking to school.

Thank you for your support,

    Health News/PE

As we start on another exciting month we are moving on to more fun topics.
Your students have covered the just say no campaign and created their own campaigns. They have also learned how the war on drugs can impact their campaigns. We are now covering the differences of positive and negative relationships. They are learning about how to create positive relationships and identify relationships that can be toxic.

We have already learned the basics of soccer, Kickball, and are currently on our softball unit. Students are being very supportive and helpful to each other. The are having a lot of fun.

Visual Art
We have had an excellent start to this school year. Students are so eager to make art and explore new ideas. I am so excited to teach all of your young artists.
5th and 6th grade: We have been practicing using pencils and colored pencils to show value (dark, medium and light) and use that value in art work to show modeling or the illusion of three dimensions. Students just completed their "Food Face" portraits. These are imaginary beings that are composed of foods, fruits, veggies and the occasional slice of pizza. We learned about Renaissance artist, Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

7th and 8th grade: Students are currently working on their second in a series of three portraits. The first was a pencil drawing, a self portrait that was an expressive, but realistic image. The second will be a drawing that features the back of a head, featuring hair! Our third portrait, will explore the idea of caricature or exaggeration. It's been fun to see the skills and creativity of these artists.

I use MyMPS for student resources. Your student can access their blended art room on mps.itslearning.com (link below) and find information about assignments, occasional homework, deadlines and links to cool art resources. If they have missing work or you have a question about what we are working on in class, please have your student log in to that site and check the planner.
Additionally, I've created a website that is serving as an art gallery for our classes. This is a great way for you to check to see what we've been making. My  goal is to keep uploading work and create new blog posts when we begin new assignments. Click below to see student artwork.
