Band/Orchestra - Kim Hotchkiss
music notes

Welcome Back to a new year of beautiful music! New music has been handed out and music is being played in our rehearsals already. The 5/6 grade varsity groups are starting their new blue practice chart for the month of September. Write those minutes of practice down. Practice is very important to be successful on an instrument!! The 7/8 grade groups will have to keep track on their own and will be writing on a self-evaluation form at the end of each quarter.

The concert dates are posted at the top of the newsletter. Please get them on your calendar. There were some mistakes on the green school calendar that was sent home. These dates in the newsletter are the most accurate. The February 7/8 grade concert was missed in the music handbook page of concert dates. Please turn in the registration forms as soon as possible.

Hello Everyone,
Let me introduce myself! I am Mr. Prichard, a student teacher working with Ms. Hotchkiss this fall. I am from Gustavus Adolphus College, a small liberal arts school in St. Peter, MN. I am finishing my degree in instrumental Music Education with an honors in composition. My main instrument is percussion, with strong backgrounds in the rhythm instruments (piano, drums, guitar, bass). I have already had a chance to meet many of the students, and am looking forward to working with such a great group. If you see me around school, please feel free to stop and chat for a bit or ask me any questions you may have!

Wanted: We are in need of small violins, so if anyone has one sitting around the house not being used, would you consider donating it to Field. Thanks.

Vocal/Rock Band/Guitar - Ruth LeMay

Happy New Year! We are off to a great start!
The choirs are sounding great already. Reminder to get in the choir registration and shirt order forms. The Madrigals will be performing again with the Sweet Colleens at the Cedar Cultural Center on Saturday, October 29th! Way to go Madrigals! The Chorale is trying a new adventure this year and singing jazz. It will be very challenging. I am excited for each choir and the great energy toward singing.

The guitar program continues to be stronger each year. Over sixty 5th/6th graders are in beginning guitar classes and over sixty are participating in advanced guitar and rock band! Fantastic! A reminder to guitar student families to get the instrumental rental form returned and the shirt order form returned. ALL GUITAR students will have a 3-ring binder that is photocopied (with permission) from Little Kids Rock (LKR). In addition to the LKR Book students will need to purchase the Essential Elements for Guitar by Will Schmid and Bob Morris for $10. It is for additional study and practice at home and in class.

I understand that there are many fees at the beginning of school. If it is helpful to delay some expenses please feel free to send some of these forms back in late September. Let me know if there is a difficulty in paying anything. NO CHILD WILL GO WITHOUT the supplies and instruments he/she needs.

Last of all, LESSONS are an exciting new part of my position this year. Not all students will get small group lessons but as many as possible will. Your patience is appreciated while I put a rotation schedule together for voice and guitar.

As always, please know that I can be contacted via email at rlemay@mpls.k12.mn.us and my cell phone at 612-819-9144. Just for your information, my school voice mail is unfortunately overlooked and not the best method for a prompt reply.

Art - Del Bey

We are off to a great start of a new school year. We are in the process of discussing the meaning of art and the connections between art and life. Students made sketchbooks for warm-ups and rough drafts.

Students were also given a Welcome to Art letter for parents and students to sign and return for 20 points. Please review the letter with your child, it explains the grading and behavior policies of the art room. The letter and curriculum are available on my school web page as well.

5/6 Grade students are working on gesture drawing. They are sketching each other and will move on to drawing their hand.

7/8 Grade students will begin working on contour drawings of pears. The drawings will be practice for a still life composition using pastels.
We will review and practice basic drawing skills before moving on to other projects.

Please visit our online art gallery at www.artsonia. com. 15% of purchases are returned to the art room for supplies.

Art Heals!

Physical Education - Marni Heck

My name is Marni Heck. I have been teaching in Mpls. for 23 years. This is my first year at Field. After first week in Physical Education class, I find students to be highly motivated and hard working. We are in the process of taking the Fitness Test (Assessment) through mid-Sept. Standard scores and goals are given to students to take home. Aerobic Soccer and Rugby will be on the agenda after the tests are finished.

Please accompany a signed note if your child is absent or ill/injured in Phys. Ed. class...thank you!

Please contact me if you have any questions. Email is best at marni.heck@mpls.k12.mn.us

Spanish/French - Brenda Leviton

Bienvenus! Bienvenidos! Welcome back to Field. This will be my second year at Field and I am excited about being back here. I am also excited about teaching French this year as well as Spanish. Looking forward to a great year!

In French for Fun class, students will be learning basic vocabulary at home each day (the vocabulary list and audio are saved on a flashdrive) that they will be tested on various sections every month. Dates of tests are at the top of the vocabulary list. Students should review vocabulary 10-15 minutes each day at home. In class, we will focus on comprehension of the language as well as communication skills needed for traveling to a French-speaking country.

For students who had Spanish last year, class will focus on comprehension as well, since I will be speaking Spanish at least half the time. This month students will be focusing on learning how to talk about activities they do. For those students that are new to Spanish, the class will focus on greetings and useful phrases for the classroom this month. ALL Spanish students will also have vocabulary to study at home (which is saved to a flashdrive) each day that they will be tested on every month. Dates of tests are at the top of the vocabulary list. They should review 10-15 minutes each day at home.
