Welcome Back Field Community!

It's great to see your students.

You must register for music classes online this year. Every student involved in choir, guitar, band or orchestra needs to be registered. The forms are on the Field webpage. If you do not have access to a computer, please have your child

get a paper copy. The 'online order forms' are the registration forms,

not just shirt forms.

Band/Orchestra -
Kim Hotchkiss

Welcome Back. It's good to see and hear all those band and orchestra students!  Thank you to those of you that have registered online. All students in a music program must do this.

We have a performance coming up quickly for the Chamber Orchestra. On Friday, Nov. 8, they will be playing at the Middle School Conference in Minneapolis during the day.

There is already a date change on the calendar - Feb. 27 is changed to Tuesday, Feb. 25 for the 7/8 winter concert.

I have handed out the first practice chart for the year. All students in the Varsity groups mark down their practice time at home as part of their grade. They are monthly charts. If your child is not good at bringing them home, there is a blank on the music webpage. This month's calendar runs Sept. 1-28.

Our rehearsals so far have been getting to know and hear who is in their group and listening to each other. We are working a lot on learning how to play together.

Art - Del Bey & Robin Jacobs  art-show.jpg

Greetings! We are beginning another exciting year in the art room. We have a new addition to the specialist team - Mrs. Robin. She will teach art 6th period M,W,Th.

Welcome to Art! My name is Robin Jacobs and I am new to Field School. I will be working with Del Bey to teach three sections of art. I have spent the past three years at Seward Montessori teaching gifted and science classes. I have enjoyed working with Field students so far, and look forward to meeting more families. Thanks to staff, parents and students who have already made me feel welcome at this wonderful school.

Art classes with Ms. Del are learning about the concept of balance-symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. To understand balance we are creating Land Art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. Students are using natural materials like wood, leaves, bark and grass to create temporary structures. The only evidence remaining is our documentation. We will post the photographs on Artsonia. Please visit our online art gallery at www.artsonia.com. 20% of purchases are returned to the art room for supplies. Art Heals!

Media/Technology - Sean Casey

My name is Sean Casey, and I am the media specialist and teacher of Media/Technology classes at Field Community School. For more information about me, please visit my webpage on our school website. For more information about the media center, please visit the media center's webpage on our school website.

So far in MediaTechnology classes, students have been (re)introduced to and have practiced media center and computer lab policies and procedures, including (but not limited to) searching for and checking out books and logging into computers using their MPS usernames and passwords.

They have also been shown how to access their MPS Gmail accounts (which is where teachers will share announcements and other information with them), their MPS Google Drive accounts (which is where they will work on and save documents and presentations for many of their classes), and the MPS Student Portal (which is where they can view their class schedules, assignments, scores, grades, transcripts and more). If you have a computer with Internet access at home, please ask them to share what they have learned about these important resources with you, and to show you that they know where to find and how to log in to each of them.

As the semester progresses, students will be learning about digital citizenship, information/media/technology literacy, and how webpages and books are created and published. They will then use everything that they have learned about each of those topics to create content for and publish their very own webpages and books. More detailed information about all of these topics and projects will be shared with you in future newsletters.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about any of the information shared in this month's newsletter, please feel free to contact me at the email address provided below.

Spanish/French - Char Swanson

Spanish 1 students (7th/8th grades) will explore the "Hispanic/Latino World," and understand and appreciate "who" the Hispanic people are, "what and how" they contributed to today's society, and "where" they can be found in our world. They will spend a couple of weeks reviewing some of the key concepts from last school year, as this will also allow all the beginning language learners (mostly 7th graders) to start the year with reasonable linguistic foundations (greetings, farewells, introductions, descriptions, family relationships, colors, numbers, dates, etc...). We will all start on the same page when we learn about all the activities (verbs) related to school/classroom responsibilities, and the "food" topic.

Spanish Foundations students (5th/6th grades) will learn about Greetings, farewells, introductions, basic courtesy expressions, and classroom expressions. They will also explore the "Hispanic/Latino World," and learn about who the Hispanic people are and what the Hispanic countries are.

French 1 and French Foundations students will explore the "World of Francophonie," and learn about all the French speaking countries in the world. French Foundations students will also learn about greetings, farewells, introductions, basic courtesy expressions, and classroom expressions .French 1 students will spend the first couple of weeks of this quarter reviewing those concepts, and will be on the same page than their classmates when they start exploring the world of food and activities related to classroom and school responsibilities.
