Our first concert of the year was a great success and lots of fun!! I truly enjoyed having the adults play along with us. It's obvious where the children's talent comes from. We also received enough money from your generous donations to buy 12 musicians chairs. That and the money from PTA means we are more than half way to our goal of 100 musicians chairs for the choir and band rooms. Thank you.

Our next performance is this Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Galleria near Big Bowl. Everyone is invited to the performances by the Chamber Orchestra beginning at 5:30 and followed by Jazz Band, Madrigals & Chorale. Orchestra members and those Jazz Band members who need to set up instruments should be there by 5:15. Give yourself plenty of time since rush hour can make the drive time much longer.

The Winter concert for the 5/6 grade bands & strings on January 24 will be at Field School and not at Washburn as originally planned. Start time is 6:30 in the Commons.

Research has shown that children need a daily reminder to practice their instrument until the age of 16. It is important for the success of your child and each ensemble they participate in. Thank You!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEB! Our volunteer accompanist is celebrating a milestone birthday this Friday, Dec. 14th. Please help us celebrate by SHOWERING HER WITH CARDS this Tuesday night! She does SO much for everyone that is involved in the music program at Field. Please take the time to say "thank you" and send a little something her way! She is instrumental in our vocal program! (pun intended)

BUTTER BRAID PICK-UP. Sales were a roaring success again this year, topping all our previous years of sales! We sold 1600 loaves for a profit of $7200! Students who sold butter braids this year need to pickup their orders on Dec. 18th outside Door 11 between 2:00 and 5:00. Please plan on distributing the product to your customers that evening. Please DO NOT ask for your personal order to be given to you directly at school. To do so means to open a student's order and that creates confusion for everyone. If you ordered from a student then the student needs to bring it to you. Thanks for your understanding. A VOLUNTEER is needed to watch over the butter braids and help distribute while I am teaching at Southwest High School from 1:30 - 3:30. EXTRA BUTTER BRAIDS are available on a first come first served basis for $11, profits will support the scholarship fund.

PERFORMANCE this Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Galleria (outside Pottery Barn). Please allow for driving time. Traffic going west can be hectic and now with snow can add to the drive time. It has taken families close to an hour to arrive in the past. Madrigals arrive at 6:00 perform at 6:15 and Chorale arrive at 6:15 and perform at 6:30.Madrigals and Chorale are the only choirs performing this week. CONCERT DRESS

BLACK HILLS CHOIR TOUR PACKETS THIS WEEK. Please take the time to sit down with your child and go over the Black Hills Choir Tour Packet. This is a lengthy packet and requires your attention as well as your child's. Some forms need to be returned BEFORE winter break and some of them are for you to keep. Notice that the itinerary is tentative at this point and will obviously need a bit of tweaking (too early in the morning) but will give you an initial framework to peruse. 7/8 Concert Choirs and Chorale are the touring choirs.

SHIRT PAYMENT REMINDER. Please remember that all children have received his/her performance shirt but not all have paid for it. A form has been sent home if your child owes money. Please return with payment or request for scholarship. It is helpful for bookkeeping. GOOD- BYE MR. HARMS. My student teacher, Jonathan Harms, is finished with his time in our classroom and has definitely made an impact in a short amount of time. Students enjoyed working with him and we wish great success as he is now a certified licensed music educator in the state of Minnesota. Congrats Mr. Harms you rock!

LOOK WHAT OUR SINGERS ARE DOING IN OUR COMMUNITY! ALL-STATE CHOIR Nov. 17th in Mahtomedi, MN was a great success! Participating students need to stop in to pick up their complimentary CD of the performance. GOOD LUCK to the Kenny Rogers singers! They perform Dec. 16th at the Mystic Lake Casino. We have been chosen out of all Metro Area public schools to perform for his Christmas Show. Congratulations to Emma Jackson (5), Siobhan Sullivan (6), Carmen LeMay(4), Lydia Wisti (6), Lucy Tschida (5) and Alison Pasdo (5). Thank you for representing Field School, Minneapolis Public Schools and the entire Metro Area! We are proud of you!

As always, please know that I can be contacted via email at rlemay@mpls.k12.mn.us and my cell phone at 612-819-9144. Just for your information, my school voice mail is not the best method for a prompt reply.

Greetings,

5/6th grade students created Mixed Media Owls. After learning about North Americans Owls student used fabric, paper, beads, bark, feathers, cotton balls, ... to explore making a collage of an owl using a variety of materials.

7/8th grade students created 3D landscapes with a focus on the skyline. Students explored the impression skyscrapers, mountains, and other structures make on the horizon. With cardboard as a base students used plaster, wood, cds, ... to make constructions of real or imagined places.
Have a safe and happy holidays.

Please visit our online art gallery at www.artsonia. com. 20% of purchases are returned to the art room for supplies.

GRADES 5 AND 6

In Grades 5 and 6, students are continuing to develop and improve their technology and typing skills by using the Type to Learn keyboarding software and by learning to use Google Drive and Google Docs.

By Winter Break, students will be nearing completion of learning to type all 26 letters using Type to Learn.

When we return from Winter Break, students will put their typing skills to the test by writing their own short stories using Google Docs.

GRADES 7 AND 8

In Grades 7 and 8, students have started the fourth and final unit of the first semester, "Comic Books." By Winter Break, students will have learned about the history of comic books and graphic novels, how they promote literacy, and the benefits of studying graphic novels as a format.

When we return from Winter Break, students will be using Pixton to create their own comics. For more information about Pixton, please visit the Pixton for Schools page and watch the "Pixton for Schools Overview Video."

Finally, for more information about comic books and about what you can do to choose good comic books and graphic novels and manage superhero play in your home, please visit the Unit 4: Comic Books page on the Field Community School website.

Spanish/French - Char Swanson

Here is the world language newsletter for December: Hola! Bonjour! December was a fantastic month for our Spanish and French students! Spanish students have been learning how to describe their classes and materials (with their colors) needed for all their classes. They also learned to express their opinions about the classes that they have. They also took a "Speaking Test" which was a summative assessment of what they have learned thus far (name, greeting, farewell and feelings). French students have learned to express their likes and dislikes about hobbies, food and an assortment of activities. They were able to make a distinction between various degrees of likes and dislikes, and also state their preferences in the target language. Just like their Spanish peers, French students also endured a summative assessment reflected in a Speaking test. Our Teal 4th period Spanish 1B students have been learning to describe one's personality and physical traits, through reading, writing, listening and speaking activities. Their cumulative assignment will be to synthesize all vocabulary learned so far, and apply it in an essay due before the holiday break (homework 3).

Our 7th grade Advisory is continuing to do an excellent work across the board. Recently, they have celebrated their second achievement (200 Green tickets!), and have enjoyed a "chinese lunch" and a movie!! Happy Holidays to all!!! Til next year.................... C. Swanson.
