Math (7th grade) - Mr. Usem
CMP2- Moving Straight Ahead cover
CMP Curriculum by Pearson / Scott Foresman

7th Grade Math at Field is an accelerated MPS class called "Telescoped Math 7 / Algebra 8". It is delivered in heterogeneous classes and uses the CMP [Connected Mathematics] Curriculum from Pearson/Scott Foresman. This curriculum and is based on work supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), and developed by Michigan State University. Our curriculum is alligned with Minnesota state standards for 7th-grade math. After completing the 7th-grade standards, we will be continuing moving on to studying the 8th-grade Minnesota math standards, in an effort to further advance our students through the curriculum. Students receive this curriculum in small "unit books" that they insert into their 3-ring binders. The math section should become a valuable resource for them throughout their 7th-grade year.

Explore Class: Art of Photography

I also teach an Explore class for 7th & 8th-graders called "Art of Photography". In this class we will explore the history of photography and elements of good photos, trying to incorporate creativity, art, and even some elements of technology. We are hoping to make this a project-oriented class where students will put together a variety of themed photo exhibits. (owning a camera is not required for this class, but student cameras will be welcome.) Explore classes occur on an "every-other-day" basis, on a "BLACK" and "TEAL" day rotation (see official Field School calendar). While much of the work in this class will be designed to be completed within the Explore class period, students may be allowed some additional homework time from this class in order to allow students time to compose and take necessary photos.

DOWNLOAD-ABLE Worksheets, Assignments, & Forms Section

Under my Classwork/Homework section LINKS at the "Top-Right" of this webpage, I have a SECTION for Download-able worksheets, assignments, & forms that are not in our regular math text.  While I am hoping to be able to keep these up, remember that the students, themselves, are ultimately responsible for getting these worksheets & assignments in class, and that this LINK is only being provided to assist those who might have lost or forgotten their worksheets or assignments at school or elsewhere.

  • While I am going to attempt to make every effort to provide this resource, there is NO GUARANTEE that all worksheets & assignments will be available through these LINKS.
Quiz / Test Re-takes available...

Quiz Re-Take policy Any students may re-take Learning Target quizzes to try to improve their score and to receive a passing grade showing that they understand the learning target. The top grade possible on a quiz "re-take" is an 85% SCORE (a solid "B" grade). Re-take quizzes may be somewhat shorter than the original, but not necessarily. Students need to re-do any incorrect items from their quiz on a separate piece of paper [A SPECIAL FORM IS AVAILABLE IN THE "DOWNLOADS" SECTION... LINK is at the top-right of this webpage], and show that to Mr. Usem (along with the original quiz) in order to be able to take the re-take.  Quiz re-takes are to be taken outside of class time, as arranged with Mr. Usem [Possible times are before/after school, during recess, during EXPLORE (with permission of EXPLORE teacher)

Students should have a "dedicated section" in their larger binder for math. In this binder/section they should have a set of 5 dividers, with the first 4 sections labelled:
  1. Lesson -PART 1
  2. Notes
  3. Vocabulary
  4. Classwork & Homework
  5. (...this section not yet named)
Students will be responsible to keep up these sections, and to put appropriate materials in each. There will be "Ready Points" given out periodically for keeping their binder up-to-date. ("Ready Point" checks will be done as spot-checks, and will be unannounced.)
